  • What is the law on student teacher relationships if the student is of age?

I understand the law about if the student is underage that is statutory rape, but I've always wondered about students on a university level. What if the student is not in the professor's class? What if they just so happened to meet where at the university and the college student it of age?
With students of sixth form age, it is not legal for a teacher to have sexual relations with a student, even when the student is over 16.

At university level, there is no legal problem, although some universities have codes of practice, especially where the teacher is assessing the student's work.
  • Can an international student start up a business in uk?

    Hello,
I have been living for two years now in the uk and i was thinking to start up my own business.
I don't know if this is possible for an international student, but anyways anyone knows which are the requirements and which is the first step?
Otherwise, is it allowed for a student holding a student visa buying a house/ flat up to £230.000.
I've checked in many websites but none of them gave me the right information.
Do I need to see a solicitor ?

    Thanks everyone..
It's not impossible for an international student to set up a business in the UK. One of the best organisations to speak to is your local Business Link. They'll be able to advise you on who to speak to about your visa conditions as well as giving you free help and information on starting in business.

Your question about buying a house depends on whether you want a mortgage for it. If you do, it's unlikely that a lender will consider you as you've no way of demonstrating long-term ability to pay for the mortgage. If you don't need a mortgage, you can buy a property in the UK, in the same way that UK nationals buy properties in other countries.

    Good luck!
  • Can Irish students receive the student loans that UK students get?

I wish to do the PGCE in England this year however financing it will be a problem for me. I was wondering if Irish students could avail of the student loans that UK students get to cover their fee's etc!
Students from any EU member country are entitled to exactly the same treatment as home students in any other EU member country. So if a British student would get a loan for this course so will you.

An international student is someone who has spent the last three years living outside the EU. This applies even if he or she has an EU member country passport.
  • What were your experiences as a mature student at University?

Hi guys, I have been thinking quite a bit recently about going to university but as Im 23 I just want to get an idea of what it will be like as a mature student, I know Im not much older than the other students will be but by the time i actually start a course I will be 24. Does anyone have any experiences of going away for uni (rather than staying at home and commuting) as a mature student? Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for looking.
im 23 and just started uni in september and its great and all my grades so far are B's and A - because i have a lot more life experience than these other students and uni is not just about course work they also mark you on how you answer the questions and if you have a lot more worldly experience than everyone else your answers are gonna be better.all my other class mates got C - and D's so i did al lot better than them cos of my age.and also the tutors treat me with a lot more respect because im a mature student the other kids arwe always joking around and not taking things seriously they always say if they fail there is always next year and obviously the tutors mark them accordingly.

  • What will happen to student loan repayments if there is a recession?

If you have a UK student loan which is taken directly from your salary and is linked to the rate of inflation, what is likely to happen if there is a recession, and the knock-on effects this would have? Can anyone enlighten me?
As the student loans company work out the rate of inflation each year as defined by the retail prices index it changes annually and you are informed of this in your statement (at the moment it's around 2.4%)

Therefore this could rise or fall depending on the yearly situation, normally not by very much, however a recession could cause a more significant change.

Of course you only pay back 9% of any earnings you have over £15,000 regardless of the debt you have and the interest applied so your payments themselves won't change. All as that will happen is the yearly interest applied to your account will be higher or lower.
