What can be done to get the UK out of the housing crisis?

Image

While the UK is in the grip of a severe housing shortage, the current government plans to cut spending on housing schemes due to the financial crisis. This would further deepen the United Kingdom's efforts in trying to find a solution for its population in sustainable and affordable housing.

In the last ten years, the cost of homes has risen almost ten times faster than that of the incomes reported by UK homeowners. This has driven the chance to own a home even further away from the average citizen. With more and more people having to resort to bankruptcy and ultimately repossession, the number of people now relying on social housing is rising to drastic levels. If Labour continues with plans on cutting back public spending in the UK, there are many risks that are faced by potential homeowners. The UK will continue to see increasingly costly housing and a more publicly owned system. This is in place of a privately owned taxpayer subsidy scheme that would assist in keeping people in their own homes and help them to weather the worst of the storm.

One proposal that has entered the fold to change the thinking and appeal of the housing market is that of The Land Trust. This approach is a reaction to rising land costs and the chronic lack of housing. The UK Conservatives, under James Cameron, believe in removing many of the previously restrictive land development authorities and giving the power back to communities. This in theory would make communities bond together and work with local developers to build homes that would suit the community and retain the flavour of their village and heritage. It would also improve the local economy and encourage the growth of local trade and industry. If this model were instituted, then it would see that the opportunity of investments from individual investors and pension funds are made possible. This would ensure that communities own their own land and that its value could not rise drastically in the future.

The Land Trust scheme may prove to be a hard sell for the Conservatives. The building industry and the trades are not entirely behind this program as they are uncertain as to the impact it will have on their earning potential. Yet ,if this great leap can be achieved, the UK as a whole could see private home ownership rising for the first time in a decade. Nonetheless, if something is not done within the property industry and taxpayer’s money is not funneled back into schemes, it may be a long road ahead.

Our earned money pays for Housing Benefit which slips straight through the hands of people on low wages and the unemployed into the wallets of BTL landlords, money which was never intended to prop up Donald Trump wannabes. Unless this form of theft from society is addressed with new legislation, we continue to provide landlords the buying power to push genuine house buyers out of the marketplace. I currently rent a flat that costs me half my wages a month and makes me apply for payday lenders.I get nothing back out of that & it all goes to my landlord and agent. If I had the money for a deposit & found a place I could buy I'd be playing out LESS money a month on a mortgage & I would see some of that money back.Sure the Government has this FirstBuy Scheme but that will help around 10k of people in England. NOT the UK as a whole.

  • Will building more houses help the housing affordability crisis?

Or will they just still be unaffordable to first time buyers and be snapped up by greedy buy-to-let landlords who see them only a profit-makers?

Before anyone mentions how "absurd" it is that in the UK we all want to "own" the home we live in, the restrictions placed upon a tenant by a landlord seeking to "maxmise return from his investment" (no pets no this no that, invasion of privacy) mean that tenant don't get to treat where they live as a "home". Also landlords have the power to do what my old landlord did - ie ask the tenant to move out so they can move rellies in. Most also won't take housing benefit but charge more in rent that some of these people would be paying in a mortgage every month! This is partly the reason people want to buy their own homes - the freedom and lack of control by their financially better off "overlords".
Council Housing is a joke in my area - we were nearly made homeless by repossession last year - I was 7 months pregnant and we were told that there are "no" council houses available, the council don't help repossession cases anyway as they see them as "intentional" (?) and all we'd get would be 6 weeks in a B&B whilst we tried to save up enough money to get a private rent. Its impossible to get any council housing round here at all.

They do give it to ex prisoners though - my mum lives on an estate and they have moved in Paedophiles and murderers.
You are so right... that exact thing is happening in the USA...

I don't even want to talk about how terrible it is that the rich are using hurricane Katrina as an excuse to descend on New Orleans like a 2nd plague...

They are actually tearing down homes so that the rich can just pave over them and "rebuild" the community...
It's legalized home theft from the poor.

They go through the "bad" neighborhoods and declare the homes "structurally unsound" and then if the family had not paid off the house or were renters, they just have to move and start over.

To make it worse, Habitats For Humanity is sending their funds everywhere else except New Orleans to be "politically fair".

People say they are building homes for the poor but they are building homes for the rich to RENT to the poor... and there is a difference.
  • What was the point of giving money to bail out the Euro when it's going to collapse?

I can't understand the naivety and political ignorance of the voting public in this country.
First they vote in a Coalition made up of Tories who have only one end to their means to protect their lackeys with wealth and their masters the banks and the stock markets and the investors,,,half of them don't even reside in the UK...I bet!
They then blame the whole country for the banking crisis and attack the pay and pensions of public sector workers and cut services that most people rely on private and public sector.
They then decide to reform the welfare state and semi privatise the NHS whilst supporting wars in the Middle East and Northern Africa and to cap it all they can afford to throw money at the Euro and this country is not even in it.
    Let's get it right.
The dream is over and we are all going to awaken to a nightmare and they only people who appear to realise this are these people who are willing to sit in a tent and protest.
Even the media can't report something without putting a spin on it to manipulate this thick British Public into swallowing the Coalitions lies.
This obsession with the housing markets in this country is the reason why we are all in this mess.
When people can no longer afford to buy mortgages the real value of the property is revealed.
The country has for years been playing with idiotic economics.
People decrease in value as they get older because they will expire.
It should be the same with everything else.
The value of things are kept high or falsely increased to enrich a minority.
There is enough for everyone and now we've just threw away money that could have been spent on getting jobs for young people and the construction industry and what will the Public do...accept because change and taking control is too frightening and uncomfortable....well we're all in for a shock.
    They had to try, John.

  • Why are Recruitment agencies and Employers so dam ruthless?

why are recruitment agencies and employers being so dam ruthless?

I have been looking for a job now for almost a year!! I have lived abroad for many years and have gained a lot of work experience from being self employed in the UK and abroad i have exceptional management experience and have employed many people and have contributed to the growth of four different companies. Now my problem is i have all this experience and transferable skills at senior management level and could be placed into most management positions as i have the skills and experience, but yet when i apply for various positions i can match the job title perfectly and perhaps 90% of the job description in most cases, i just get rejection after rejection. The problem i have is, i have been self employed since i left school at 16, i am now 37 with bags of experience in business, been out the country for over 5 years, i have never needed to do a CV, but due to the crisis over the past couple of years i find myself looking for a job for the first time! My Cv has been checked by various agencies and they say its fantastic some great achievements, all very well, but i am gutted i'm not getting a chance for an interview.

So back to my question "why are recruitment agencies and employers being so dam ruthless." I understand agencies work on commission etc, but to meet a 100% of the criteria stated in the job description is almost impossible, not only for me, but for most people i'm sure. I feel if you want to try out a new job in a different industry forget it because every position states you have to have proven experience in that field of work. To me as a former boss it doesn't matter if you feel you can do the job, unless you have been selling cars and you want to be a brain surgeon, then yes, you study for that and then become qualified etc, but, what if you have not studied, perhaps you don't have the money to study, but yet, you have the talent and experience you've gained from working up the ranks from a young age and you can transfer those skills to many different industries. Lets look at sales - sales is basically common sense, it doesn't matter what the product it is, its how you sell it, there is no difference in selling a car as to selling a house just different paper work and procedures, but, "how long does it take to learn those procedures?", not long, a week or so!! So you can see my frustration in these recruitment agencies and employers, they should be more flexible, there is so much talent out there that just doesn't get recognized, millions of people are unemployed, my way of thinking is different as i used to give people a chance to prove there worth even if they didn't quite fit all the job description, they were enthusiastic and determined and well motivated and could demonstrate the will to work, how could i say no!!

My conclusion is the recruitment agencies and perhaps the many company's out there seeking new recruits, i say this; don't throw away talent, 3...
I think the problem today is that Agencies are displaying and advertising jobs that don't exist. The amount of times I have contacted an agency about a job and have been told that it has already been filled BUT they could take my details blah blah.
The other problem is that if an agency has your details and is forwarding it for a certain job, if the company doesn't want you for any reason, the agency can bend backward to try and convince them that you would be perfect. Also there are currently so many people seeking work and just not enough jobs going around. That one job you think you are great for may just receive 10 other applications from people just as skilled and qualified but maybe with better references ...

We are actually fairly lucky over here, in Germany you would have to pay the agency 2000 Euro to find you a job!! ??

As you said, Keep the faith!! :)
  • who was given the job to ruin the country (uk)?

i personally choose not to vote so usually i would keep quiet but tonight was the final straw.

    health and safety:
is this really needed to such an extent? why is that it has to take me longer to fill out risk assessments and all that crap than it would to do the job in the first place. is it really necessary for a sticker outlining how to use a ladder correctly and advising the user to complete the necessary training to use it.. health and safety really needs to be sorted out before they ban the population from leaving a house when not wrapped in bubble wrap. recently there was a story about some coast guards that got fined for breaching health and safety when saving a girl drowning in the sea! wtf?!

    political correctness:
since when has black bored been used as a racist comment? if it has been then surely white bored is just the same? how can someone seriously be offended by the term brain storm? how many people do you know that has thunder and lightening storms in their heads? and all these nursery rhymes that are being changed.. how many multi colored sheep have you seen in ur life if there were such sheep i can see why someone would want the wool. are children these days that insecure that they cant know the truth about humpty dumpty's death?
the 7 dwarfs made that story of snow white and should at least get a mention in the title.. was it really necessary to get rid of the drunken sailor and if so who came up with the lyrics about a grumpy pirate that will be changed soon i bet it might encourage children to join the pirates stealing all those boats O.O or maybe download films and sell the dvds. i read somewhere last year that someone complained about father Christmas saying ho ho ho? i mean come one.. don't be so soft... Asians complaining about an advert with a dog on lol riiiight i think you should find something better to do with your time.

    crime and punishment:
there has been an increase in knife crime, murders and rapes surely that is enough evidence to bring in the death penalty.. i am 18 if i murdered someone maximum is like 20 years i think id get (correct me if im wrong) so i could kill someone and get out when im 38 and can somewhat restart my life that isn't very fair. just read in the paper then that someone who supplied a gun in a murder only got 3 years probably be out in 1 year through good behavior personally i think he should of gotten 10 years at least.

    credit crisis:
if this wasn't talked about on every single page of every single paper then people wouldn't be that scared to spend cash and the economy wouldn't be that bad.. i walked past the job center today on my dinner break, people were queuing up outside waiting for space in there yet the country is still letting people in all the time paying millions in benefits every week majority of which is to people who are capable of getting a job.

    benefits:
i worked for a few years, payed tax and national insurance.. went to college to get some qualifications so i could...
Bravo... You are correct on every count. Like you I have been fed up with all our liberties taken away, in fact we have got to the point that before you open your mouth you have to think of what you are going to say, otherwise you get jumped on.We are not free any more as we have not got the freedom of doing anything that we would like and always have done in the past, as we are racists. That word really gets to me and cannot stand it.People have come to our Country , and instead of them obeying our Laws we have to revert to their way of living., and obey what they want. I had to work fifty nine years to get my Pension, but people come in here, bring their elderly folk and they get Pensions straight away. There is something not quite right about all of this.
  • I was wondering if anyone could give me some info on where the best places to live in British Colombia are?

From what I can tell from all the other answered questions on here it really depends on who you are, what you do and if you like a particular climate. I thought if I put a bit of info about myself on here that someone might be able to advise me. I know its a long shot but really all I want is some direction as to where to begin my research.

Ok, so... I’m 27. I currently studying to be a counsellor (psychotherapist) so my first question would be are UK qualifications recognised in Canada or should I be expecting to do some sort of top up or equivalent qualification. I do intend to keep studying throughout my life as I love it but I would need to be able to use what I have at the moment to establish myself in a job. Second question would be is there much call for counsellors in Canada? In the UK they have always been fairly in demand, not so much as in the US but there’s work out there.
    My preferences are as follows.
I need water... be it beach or a lake. I could not live anywhere that was landlocked.
I love winters to be cold and summers to warm... I hate baking hot weather but I do like a few nice weeks a year where the weather is nice enough to camp, go exploring or just to sit out in the garden. In the UK whenever the weather does anything more or less than grey skies/rain the whole transport system falls apart. We have had whole days of intercity rail disrupted because there have been leaves on the tracks not to mention the crisis the recent snow caused! I’d quite like to be know I can make it into work when it snows, so somewhere with a good transport system.
I love walking, horse riding so somewhere with a variety of terrain/environments would be ideal. I love hill walking... not mountain climbing... I am not fit enough. I’d keel over if some presented me with a mountain. I’d also love to learn how to snowboard (although in reality it might me less exciting than I imagine... I might also be more physically inept that I imagine too so it’s not of huge importance).
I do love to go out to bars and clubs until 6 a.m occasionally but I really do not want to be surrounded by it all the time. My normal haunts are somewhere you can settle in for the night with good music, friendly locals and maybe a pool table. So I’m thinking not a major city but somewhere with enough going on to keep me occupied.
I love live music and festivals so I’d need to be within distance of either an airport or somewhere that has a good music venue. At the moment I live in between Manchester and Liverpool so there are a few places that are within an hours’ drive but if theres not a lot going on London is only a 2 hour train journey.
I could not live in an isolated place... I need neighbours. Not to be best friends with but in case anything ever happened. I’d need to know in case of emergency that I could get out of my house and reach someone else or a phone. So vast sprawling sparsely populated places are a definite no. Having said that I would rather...
    Is Prince Edward Island there?
  • What is your opinion? I need some advise?

    Hi

Just need some of your views or if you weren in my situation what would you do?
OK, I'm 23 and I'm aslo married with a 10 month old son. My partner is 26 and we've been together for 3 years. Since we got married and had a baby our finances have really shot straight down, I'm not a person who likes being in dept (well I guess no one likes to be in debt) but from the past 2 years we've accumilated so much debt that It's starting to freak me out, I don't blame my wife or my son as we were spending it all together

We both come from different countries and living in the UK, the probem I've got is I'm getting tired of working and having just enough money to pay the bills and groceries and have nothing left after a week I get paid. We live in a nice flat but also expensive too.

So I came up with a suggestion to my wife that we move somewhere cheaper or share a house with mybe another couple so we can sort out our finances and atleast start saving as we have absolutey no savings but she crushed both the ideas, I ask her what are we going to do and she never answers as she doesn't know.

I would like to go back home next year to start a business that I've been thinking alot about, and I feel that I need to start sorting things out NOW, pay off all the debts, save up some money, get the things I'l need and head off, she kinda likes the idea but I can tell she not really 100% sure.
So a few weeks ago I asked if she could go back to her moms house back in Europe for atleast 4 months so I can rent a single room, sell my car as I can cycle to work (can't sell now due to having the baby), and just basically live hard for that time just to get rid of the debt and atleast have some money in the bank for both us, my son and the future. At the moment I can't even think clearly because I'm with my boy everyday after work as she works evenings at a restaurant plus I've got a few courses I'm doing and have no time to study aswell. But the wife insits that she doesn't want to separate, even if we send our boy to live with my wife's mom, she'll never share a house with anyone.
I have alot of things that I feel they need sorting out plus my dream of starting that business after I finish my studies, but I kinda feel that I'm being held back by my wife. If I was on my own I would have probaly achieved quite alot as I had before I met her. Now I'm just stuck because I'm always trying to make her and my son happy and It's so difficult as I feel I can't make these choices alone. My wife has no abitions no dreams and no goals and I'm also scared to leave her.
I've explained that I need the time alone and start planning ahead, I also need time to find mysef again and all I need is 4 to 6 months alone with occational visits ofcourse, then when they come back we'll have a fresh start.
But everytime I bring this issue up we end up in an argument and the mode just changes. She is comfortable at the moment but I've said she needs to think about the future, In this current...
I'm not going to tell you "welcome to the real world" as the others are doing. I think you already know you are in the real world.

First, I commend your idea about downsizing. I think you should go that route. However, I strongly urge you to downsize with your wife and baby son. You and your wife need to have a firm, adult conversation about the finances. I think you need to tell her your feelings concerning changing your apartment to a cheaper one. If you sit down with your wife to discuss this, make up a list of things that you both can do without, ie., downsize, get rid of, have a yard sale, etc. Ask her opinion and her thoughts. I wouldn't try to shoulder this yourself and you shouldn't have to. Both of you made the financial mess you are in so both of you need to figure out a way out of it.

I think your wife's negative reactions and your constant fights are the product of her hurt feelings that you would even remotely suggest that you separate to "find yourself..." The time for finding yourself ended when your wife had your son. There's no time for that now and separating from your wife and son will, I promise you, cause serious animosity. Especially for the reasons which you related to her for wanting to separate. I'd knock my husband into a third world if he told me what you told your wife.

As far as your business is concerned, you may have to shelve that idea for a bit. I commend you for thinking forward and having dreams and goals, however, you can only deal with one problem at a time and your financial wellbeing and that of your family should be dealt with first before you attempt to tackle the other issues.

I wish you and your family good luck in weathering your storm.

My husband found that after 40 years in catering and running his own business he was on the scrapheap. Recruitment agencies operate age discrimination, if you are over 35 they do not send on the CVs although they say they do. Jobs are advertised which are already filled. Most of these places are run by one man and his dog and should be closed down. The largest agencies are manned by 20 somethings who think anyone their age must be the best bet.
We started to look at companies with their own internet vacancies and my husband found a very well paid job within a week.
You are not alone. don't give up hope.
  • S&D: What do you think of these "top 10 reasons women cheat"?

In case you can't be bothered opening the article, I'll copy it in.
    http://uk.askmen.com/top_10/dating_150/181b_dating_list.html

    Number 10
    Not enough sex
Remember the good old days when you could stay up forever fooling around? Then responsibility entered the mix -- and kids -- and before you knew it, sleep was more important than sex. Well, women want to feel wanted. If you’re not making her feel that way, she could seek it elsewhere. To keep that spark alive, ask her out on date nights, send her provocative e-mails at lunch, and by all means, don’t let life get in the way of kissing, cuddling and sex.

    Number 9
    Being the bad girl
Just as men feel the urge to sow their wild oats, some women have an inner sex kitten just waiting to be unleashed -- and when the beast escapes from the cage, look out. This frisky behavior usually rears its ugly head in response to some sort of life change -- major weight loss, new job, new friends, mid-life crisis, etc. Keep the lines of communication open and she’ll be more likely to talk to you about what’s going on instead of spilling her guts to a stranger in the night.

    Number 8
    Self-esteem
Sex can be an instant pick-me-up; a self-esteem booster that makes women feel sexier, more beautiful and more loved. If your wife or girlfriend has self-esteem issues, it doesn’t mean she’s automatically going to cheat -- and it’s certainly not your fault if she does -- but there are ways to make her feel secure in the relationship that could help her from straying. Pay attention to her, ask her questions and don’t hold back on compliments -- a little flattery goes a long way with women.

    Number 7
    Revenge/payback for past wrongs
No, you didn’t cheat, but whether you blew your retirement fund in Vegas or got caught in a big lie, you did break her trust (and, possibly, her heart). She feels wounded and betrayed -- and wants to hurt you the same way you hurt her. To regain her trust, it’s not enough just to tell her you’re sorry; you have to show her. Actions speak louder than words.

    Number 6
    Lack of intimacy
You have it all: the house, the two-car garage and the two-and-a-half bathrooms -- at least on the outside. But inside, the relationship is lacking the one thing women want most: intimacy. It’s not just sex that makes women feel connected in a relationship; it’s touching, kissing, cuddling, and communicating. Women crave it, and she could seek it elsewhere if she’s not getting it at home. To improve intimacy, spend quality time together, give her a foot massage, make a romantic dinner for two -- anything that will give her a sense of unity and closeness.

    Number 5
    Feeling neglected/ignored/underappreciated
Women wear many hats in a relationship -- housekeeper, errand-runner, grocery shopper, babysitter, etc. When she feels more like a maid than a girlfriend/wife, that’s when she could stray. The fact that you spend all your time at work or on the golf course gives her double reason to seek...
Yeah, they seem true enough. I would and could never cheat, but number 4 was the reason we broke up and because of number 4 I was incredibly tempted! And yes, the idea seemed a lot more like moving on than cheating.
