    Being a finance officer myself I do believe that the financial adviser is another term for salesman.
    They only tell you what they have on offer but never tell you (i.e. advise) which is the best option for your particular circumstances - in case of later litigation.

In short, how and where do they carry out their advice? Do they mainly visit clients at home, at work, or do their clients visit them at their bank branch?
    Financial planning is generally done in the office of your rep.

    Most large firms sponsor those kinds of meetings to be done face-to-face - but for the sake of your comparative perspective, I know for a fact that the financial sector in the countries you mentioned is state-led. Japan and Germany has been most successful with this strategy.
    The key tasks of advisers in these countries is to keep clients informed of gov policy regarding tax implications and asset allocation.

    US policy towards other countries in terms of shaping their financial system might be more interesting to look at...

    I want to see an IFA to talk about what annuity I should buy. Do they charge a fee or do they work on commission from the Annuity provider?
    They can do both or either. Personally, I think that you should use a fee-only Certified Financial Planner. That way they have no financial interest in what you buy or invest in.

    The CII is more respected in the industry than the IFS. Plus the CII is a level 4 qualification the minimum standard from 2012. I don't think the IFS is as high qualification.

    I know our financial advisor doesn't strut around like a God, and if he did, we'd simply go and find another one. These people are professionals, like doctors, lawyers, business owners, etc., and they should act professional. If they don't, then I doubt they'll have many clients, since people are paying them for their expertise.
