    It seems that you need a degree to work out which company offers the cheapest gas & electricity prices.Particularly when you look at all their tariffs & various plans.
    Is there a simple way of working out which company would provide me with the cheapest prices currently?

    The credit checks that most insurance companies do is what is called a soft hit. This is what is ran on you by advertisers (the things you get in the mail for credit cards). I work for an insurance company and during training through out the year I run between 50- 100 quotes on myself in different states. My credit score is virtually unchanged by running these quote. My credit score over last year went up 10 points, even with all the soft hits on my report.

    Many comparison sites will have agents phoning you after a day or so of you submitting.
    It depends on the individual agent what he/she can offer but in my experience after doing half a dozen sites I get enough agents to cover the whole spectrum for me and more.

    seller sites either report, or the price comparison website records daily prices of items. Then when you search, you find the best price, some include shipping charges in the total price.

    comparisons only looks at stores that subscribe to it .. The local high street shops are not on the list for comparisons , and can often be cheaper ,
