We are moving to the UK on 30 July and found a beautiful property which family of ours went to see on our behalf on the ame day the property became available. That same night she paid the agent the GBP200 admin fee as we wanted the house. 2 days later the agent came back saying that the landlord had had bad tentants before and he wanted a 6-month deposit. We refused, but bcause we are from South Africa, agreed to give him a 3 month deposit and one month's rent in advance and pay for a South African Credit check for their purposes, as well as get a letter from my husband's company, stating that they would pay the rent if we forfeit.
Two agonising days later, the agent let us know that the landlord had agreed and asked us to sign their documentation as well as provide her with copies of passports, payslips, information for the credit check, etc.
Last night, another 2 days later, she agent lets us know that the landlord's wife had agreed to our terms, but not the landlord himself and he would settle for nothing except 6 months worth of rent in advance.
What are our rights? Do we have any? I know we are foreigners, but my husband is the financial manager of a company here and is moving to London as the CFO of a media company. We have an excellent credit record in SA.
Pleae help!
Oh dear it sounds like your landlord has had some really bad tenants in before hand then.
May be company your husband works for could let the property for you as part of his wage so the company are not out of pocket and what with the company having a big wallet it means the landlord would still get the rent money and plus the company would not be subletting.
Failing all that idea I would try looking at a different place with a different landlord.

If the landlady has agreed to one thing and it is in black and white surely that is a done deal then
Or is it husband and wife as joint landlords and neither one of them can not make a descision on there own and get it right.
If someone has agreed to one thing and X amount of money has been paid then what is the problem.
Some people are just complete moor - rons full stop.
It is simple they either want to rent the property out and get the money or they want it to sit there empty so as they can sit and moan at the agent for not getting anyone when neither one of the said owners can make there flaminging mind up.
Landlord and landlady of the said property get a life and pull your finger out.

Think I might go for the option of looking at a different landlord as that is a lot of money to put up front.
May be your company could put it up for you in one go and have done with it. I would watch out that this landlord dose not do something like after a six month tenancy decide he don't want you there.
