Electric prices

bordercollie's picture

My electric supplier tells me my prices has gone up by 2.6%.

I have just been and bought one of those emergy electric meters that tells you how much electric you are using each day and so on.

Well I only rang to get the exact figures as I have two day rates and a econmy 7 rate. I know that I am charged at a slightly higher rate for the first so many units then after that it drops to a slightly lower rate and of course at 1.00am it goes in to economy 7 rate.

I asked for the prices and they tell me it has gone up and that my tarrif / account name has changed.

I am now waiting for them to ring me back to tell me what exactly is going on. I don't know if anyone else has done similar to me and that is bought a device and telephoned for the cost but I suggest that you check out your prices you are paying.

I will put a post on here just as soon as I get the exact figures out of this amazing electric company.

I like the idea of how your electric prices are split. I only have one tarrif and get a bill at the end of the quarter.
That econmy 7 tarrif sounds really good. Gosh I wish I had that then I would be running the washer and what have youu in the early hours of the morning on that one.

Sounds like a bit of a carry on there the prices going up by 2.6%. Gosh they will do anything to make an extra quid out of us. Do these electric companys think we are made of money or what.

I hope you get it sorted and would be interested to see what it is they are charging you.

Well after such a carry on with my electric supplier I think that I got someone who did not have a clue what the hell they was talking about

I got in touch with someone else there today and got some light on the subject. It turns out that the rise has affected me by 0.01% if they have said that correctly.

So I currently get the first 250 day units at 23.36p pkw then after that 11.20p pkh then the night rate the economy 7 is at 4.82p pkh

They said the tarrif I have means that if the prices go up it will not affect it much which is just as well.
I really thought I was going to get a massive bill but turns out I think I will be ok. Smile

They are good electric prices you are paying in todays pricing. I would stick with them now you seem to have got sorted.

That was a bit of a carryon though. Sounds to me like someone did not know what they was doing at the other end. Most likely some trainee. I hate it when you righ the electric people or gas people or any other outfit to get the exact pricing and all you want is a simple answer not a whole load of messing about. Was thinking about checking my electric out but I think I may get some old bill out first and have a read through before I pick the phone up.

  • are gas & electric prices different for different postcodes?

all the comparison sites want your post code. this suggests to me that we pay different prices depending on your postcode, having trouble understanding how my bills are so high when my work colleagues are paying far less.
You are asked for post code because not all companies supply to the same areas.
There is certainly no difference between post codes within a company. If there was people would be up in arms over it. You can confirm this by looking at the tariff of each company. Only one charge per unit wherever you live.

You did ask a question earlier today about high usage. You should turn off everything electrical and then observe if the dials on your meter are moving, if they are then there is obviously something using power. Could you have telephone answer machine or burglar alarm or central heating or some appliance you take for granted that is using the electricity? Some things are power hungry e.g. tumble dryer.
  • When are the gas and electric prices going to come down?

I thought the government was putting pressure on these companies to lower their exorbitant prices.
Just received gas & electric bills & was at 1st pleasantly surprised at the reduction until I looked more closely
The costs per unit were identical to previous quarter But they have only billed me for 10 weeks compared to 13 weeks in previous quarter
    They are truly con artists
  • Why has gas and electric prices gone up so much?

Can anyone tell me why these prices have rissen so much.
We are told by the media that prices are rising but are not told why.
Shear greed, they have a captive market
and screw the ordinary people of the UK,
Six million people are now in fuel poverty
    with more to fallow.
This government should sting the gas and
electricity suppliers with a windfall tax now
then bring all utility company's back into
    public ownership.
  • UK - Gas & Electric prices up by 40% by end of year! What are you going to do without to pay your bills?

I'm getting rid of the TV. I'm sure the savings on the licence fee will more than cover the expence.
    Food

Or just freeze to death. Starve or freeze, it won't be a pretty end.

Still, as long as the businessmen get their money eh? Capitalism is so wonderful don't you think. Yay for privatisation (not) . . .
  • Is it a good idea to have my electric/gas prices 'fixed' until 2013?

I'm with British Gas and had a letter from them suggesting this, but I don't know if it's a good idea.
If it works the same as mine does, then it could be a good idea. Basically, the company allows you to pay a certain amount a month (fixed). The price changes drastically every month. By paying a fixed amount you know what you bill is. It means that some months you pay over what the actual bill is and in some months you pay less than what the actual bill is. The company is simply averaging your bill out. When and if you change companies, you simply pay what is left for the bill or the company may give you a refund. You need to contact the company for your questions, but I would do it because you can do a budget with a fixed price rather than suddenly having a steep bill than you cannot pay for a certain month.
  • Is there a website that lists all electric/gas suppliers prices?

I don't mean uswitch etc, i just want to see who charges what so i can compare in one go, nothing to do with what i use...just somewhere that informs.
    Yes http://www.uswitch.co.uk
  • "how much does it cost to charge an average mobile phone at todays current electric prices?" ?

    Assume a 2AH 3V battery (typical).
Assume 10c per KW Hour (I pay this in CA).

    Energy in battery = 2 * 3 = 6 Watt hours.
    Cost = 6*0.1/1000 = 0.06 cents.

Figure an efficiency of 50% for the charger and battery, so the cost of the actual power used is 0.12 cents.

In other words, a small fraction of a cent.
  • Is it time the Government stepped in and stopped the gas and electric companies raising prices again?

No way will we be able to pay 15 to 40 % more!!!!!!
The government should be looking at reducing the costs!!
If there was real true competition between the Gas and Electric companies NO.
But the Gas and Electric companies connive to rig the market so they can charge us all more and more without fear of losing any of their customers.
Typical of this government that likes big business more than the ordinary punter, who has little chance of getting a fair deal.
  • RIP OFF BRITAIN !Its becoming very obvious this statement is true. Now,when we need it gas and electric prices?

are set to rise, motor fuel is rising constantly, house prices are ridiculous ,and the wage structure is rapidly decreasing due to cheap foreign labour.Good jobs are non existant for the majority, the list goes on and on.So is the standard of living in the UK for the honest taxpaying citizen going down the pan.
Ge up in the morning go to work (every day) abide by the law & you will be ripped off. Or dont contribute at all and the government will pass legislation to look after you.........Errr is this the country my parents & grandparents worked & fought for ?
  • Should the goverment step in and put controls on the increasing cost of electric prices and bring them down?

The cost keeps spiraling month after month I am going to start a campaign agains it, I would like as many e mails as possible to send to Tony Blair and press for change in the label of rip off britain, join my fight and e mail me your protests I will contact mr Blair and fight for the right to fair prices. if everyone in the country switches off their electric for 1 day a month they may get the message, I am switching mine off completely tomorrow, I will eat out of a chip shop or mac Ds and visit a friend for a while. It is time to fight back I say, what is your views on this
How can they step in when there is a global power shortage. We have little control over what our European and Russian suppliers dictate. What should be asked is where did all that profit from 'our' North Sea oil and gas reserves go?
