Badly Fitted Lock On Back Door Of Rented Property

mouse4u1's picture

Recantly we had a burgular while we was out and the back door got kicked in. The landlord sent someone to fit a lock but it was a complete bodge up. they have only put gloryfied shed lock on it.

I am not convinced this will approve for my insurance. Should I ask for one of those Yale locks or just do it myself and make sure it fits properly.

I don't want to pester the landlord for the sake of it. Oh and luckily the said burgular did not get anything he saw the Mrs stood there and ran off. Ok they got disturbed before they had chance to do anymore damage but did get away.

Hi there. I think you need to contact either the landlord or may be first have a look in the local D.I.Y shop and see how much a proper lock is for the door.

Once finding the price out you could have that as a back up plan and say to the landlord that the person who put this lock on is not the correct type of lock and that you would not mind getting it and fitting it.

Do remember to go in all nicely on the approach then that way it shows your not being a pain in the kneck so to speak. You could also say that it is not insurance approved and that you insurance policy is void. Any good landord should say ok fair enough lets get it changed. It may have even been a case of that was done just to make it secure while a better one is obtained.

That does not sound very good at all my friend.

I suggest you email the landlord with a photo showing the workmanship and ask nicely if that was just a quick fix until they get a better lock.

It may just be a quick fix. If not I would ask once again I use the word nicely and say can you have a proper one as it is not good enough for the insurance policy you have and that you want to be able to get out quickly should there be a fire or some other unforseen event taking place.

Thank you for all the great comments on this subject I posted.

I have managed to get hold of the landlord who was quite understanding actually.

He even came out and had a look him self and said look this guy I used was not as go as he was meant to be and would not be using him again. He even did the job him self and put a new propper lock on.

He said I want to rent a nice property out and have happy tenants otherwie he would not have any.
He said that he was so sorry that it had been bodged up and that if anything else needed doing then just to let him know and if I thought the work did not look right that I was to contact him straight away and that he would check it out and get right.

So yeah looks like I have got a good landlord. I did say to him that I did not want to sound like a tenant who was moaning just for the sake of it. He agreed and said yes the job should have been done correctly to start with or if late at night a temporary job to secure it then first thing the correct type of lock used.

Anyway all sorted now on that so both sides are happy.

Well at least I don't need to say thank you now as you have done it Oliver.

There are a lot of good people on here who give some very good replies to various topics.

I shall also say thank you to all those who posted comments regarding the said topic.

Well that is nice to know. That there are SOME nice lanlord left in this day and age.

I have heard shocking stories where some take so long to reply that tenants have either done the work them selfs or moved out to a better place. Then there are others who just will not get the work done at all.

Looks like you have a good one there. Pay your rent and when something does fail go direct to the landlord and it looks like things should get done fairly quickly.

Sounds like that person who came out at the start should have been on that tv show Rouge Traders

You could have understood if they had said to you look this is a temp fix for tonight and I will be here for 8.30am with a brand new lock & fittings as they may not have had one in stock at that time of night.

I like to do a job right. It is ok to do a temporary fix to make something safe then go and get what you need but not to leave it as a perm job.

Keep up your good relation with your landlord or landlady. It sounds like you may have a good one there, not many of those about.
