Are you on a water meter and how much is your bill?
Mine works out at about £50 per month. We are 2 people who have showers, do not waste water but are now too scared to flush the toilet. Changing to a water meter was a BIG BIG mistake. We live on the South coast in the UK. Do not think that changing to a water meter will be cheaper. Our water bill has nearly trebled!
Our payments are higher than yours, over £66 per month & again only the 2 of us.The meter was here when we bought the house & is apparently not removeable. We live in Devon where we have the highest water rates in the whole of the UK as together with Cornwall we have to maintain the biggest coastline too, over a third of the whole UK coastline. Also the greatest amount of tourists who use our water with relatively low actual population so the high cost is split between fewer of us.South West Water are our providers & unlike the other utilities you are stuck with the provider where you live & cannot shop around.
We used to live in East Anglia where meters were not compulsory & our bills were less than half what we pay nowIs there any way of cutting water bill down if you dont have a meter?
We live in a flat so we cant change to a water meter. We paid £400 a year on water, and dont even use that much, Theres only 2 of us. Were finding it a real struggle. Is there any way opf cutting the cost? It wouldnt make a difference if I left the tap running or not, I will always pay the same. It that the same for everyone? I live in NW england.
Do you actually know for sure that you can't have a water meter? I know people who live in flats and have one.
If you don't have a meter, the amount you pay for your water is based on the rateable value of your home, and I agree this can be a lot - especially if there are only two of you. You could be paying the same amount as a family with young children.
You could try phoning your local water company for advice. Is this water meter bill normal? In the UK?
We just had our water meter bill for 6 MONTHS. It is £274. We are 2 adults who are out all day.
We shower instead of bath. No kids. Just a normal semi. No swimming pool.
There are no water leaks. I checked. The meter reading does not alter over 1 hour with no taps on.
If you still have doubts there's some information in the link about further ways you can check that your meter is working properly:Water meter?
I am moving house- there is no water meter installed at my new property and I think the seller used to pay about £40 per month on water bill. Do you think water meter will be cheaper.
Check with your local water company. The last one I dealt with supplied meters free on request (you fit them) but you could opt out of paying on it after one month if you didn't like it.
That was a few years ago though.should i pay my water bill if my meter has not been working for a long time?
been paying 30 pound a month for my water but found out my water meter has not been working for long time and the water board are saying expect a big bill while it has not been working should we pay the bill
How can they charge you for something if they have no proof of usage...
Wish my water meter was broken.Water meter error. Huge bill. Can they do this?!?!?
I recently moved out of a flat and received a huge final water bill. It was apparently down to the fact that the meter that they had installed was not working for over a year! All the bills that I received were estimates but I didn't realise this. They have now contacted me to say that I owe them a massive water bill. I don't understand how they can ask me for a bill if they have told me that the meter wasn't working for over a year and I am also amazed that they did not find out that the meter wasn't working for this time. All the bills that i received were paid on time but they were estimates. Where do I stand???
I would call them and contest this bill. They will most likely have someone come out and look at it. This is key---if you don't like the outcome of this matter, keep calling back. I find that I can almost always get someone to agree with me if I catch the right person on the right day. I wouldn't pay this bill until your matter gets resolved in a way that you are satisfied with. I have gotten a lot of bills lowered this way.

www.lovecurse.comCan somebody on a water meter get rid of it and bill normally?
My friend has just bought a house and didn't know it was on a water meter. She's been quoted £920 a year rather than around £280 for standard billing.
Is there any way she can get rid of the meter and pay a monthly fee? She has three very young children (one is a small baby) and is beside herself with worry as she can't afford the bills. She isn't on benefits so can't make any kind of claims for help.
I'm afraid she's stuck with the water meter but the cost doesn't seem right to me. Maybe it also includes the sewerage charge which is usually calculated as being the same as the amount of water used. Even so it is still high.
If you go to U Switch website they have a calculator to give you an estimate based on your use not the previous owners. So you put in number of people, how many baths, how many showers, how many times flush toilet, how many times use washing machine, how many times dishwasher in a week and it works out roughly what you should pay. If your friend does this maybe it will be lower and put her mind at rest - I hope so.Water meter v water bill?
I live in South Cambs in the UK and have just got my water bill for the year which is around £350.
There's only me and my husband at home, we're not there during the day, both have a bath or shower every day, use the dishwasher every day and washing machine 4 times a week. In the summer we use a hosepipe to water the garden (90ft garden) and to wash cars.
How much cheaper would it be if we switched to a meter? I don't want to be constantly worried about flushing the toilet too many times a day!! Has anyone switched over and actually saved money? I know you can't switch back once you've done it but I really need to save money where I can at the moment and this seems like a good place to start.
Tio - I know there are only 2 of us but 4 loads of washing a week is the maximum. My husband has to have white shirts for work which I cannot wash with other clothes and I always wash towels and bedclothes separate aswell as doing a lot of handwashing too. I have considered getting some water butts also.
Water meters are a complete con.
In fact, if you get a written breakdown of what they are actually charging you for, you might find that they are over charging you and have done for many years.
A property I was living at, I was being charged for water in the garage, I pointed out that theirs no water in the garage and they came back and then said the charge was for run off from the garage roof until I pointed out that the run off runs off on to the garden. And they had the audacity to tell me that the charge was for the garden run off and I told them to stop pissing around and treating me like a twat, to which they terminated the call.
Water company's are a bunch of cheeky bastards who con and rip millions of people off and get away with it. They plead poverty yet are proud to announce the billions of pounds that they had made IN PROFIT that year! Profit as you know is after "RUNNING COSTS" have been accounted for... They wouldn't be as hard up as they claim to be if they didn't pay out such large dividends to investors.
You want to check how many homes have an external water pipe and water in their garage for hoses and also check where your building run off goes, is it down the drain or in to your garden because they charge a large percentage for the "Surface area" of your land and property.
You would be surprised at what they do charge you for. Check you bills, challenge these people because they are committing legalised theft.water meter?
I live in a house with my mother and we need to cut down on some bells does anybody have any opinions on getting a water meter fitted,we dont water a garden or wash cars, run a dish washer and outr house probably does have quite a high ratable value(the way water bill charges are decided) please help
If you contact your water supply company, they may fit you a water meter on a trial basis (12mths), i have advised some of my customers in the same situation as you, & they have saved a considerable amount's on their water bills. You will only pay for what you use with a meter, not for maximum occupancy of your property. Hope this helps. :)Should I pay my water bill when the meter has not been working?
When I moved in to a flat a while ago we got a water meter installed. However, it was only when I gave the water company the final water meter reading (for when i moved out) that they realised it had not been working correctly. Apparently I had been paying estimated bills for a long time and they have now sent a final bill for a huge amount! I did phone them and say that it is not my fault that their meter was not working properly and I was unaware of the problem. I paid all of the bills that I received from them on time and had no idea that the meter was not functioning correctly. can they issue me with a large bill?? Also, I don't know how they have arrived at the figure in the final bill if they say that the meter had not been working!! HELP!!!!!
Foig f;
The meter readers seldom actually read the meters. Instead, the water company sends estimated bills, and make any corrections when they must, for new customers.
Hi there.
It sounds like you could have a leaky pipe or maybe has your neighbor had his hosepip clipped on to a outside tap you may have or maybe the water company has got it wrong.
I would like to suggest you take the reading now. Make sure nothing is using water and see what is happening. You can also make sure you have no water running and ask your neighbor to turn his tap on to see if it clocks up the numbers. If it is still clocking up numbers with both of you not having anything running that uses water then it could be a burst pipe some where. You may want to call the water company as soon as possible if that is the case. I understand that they charge for everything that goes through the meter to your property.
Even better lets hope they have made a mistake and wont be giving you that bill you said about.

There's not much I can add onto dogwalker's comment, other than to say that its comprehensive and sound advice! Also, to wish you luck in your pursuit of this matter. In my experience, dealing with institutions such as the waterboard is usually tricky. Especially considering they are immune to making mistakes. Good luck my friend!
A few months back I went on vacation to the Greek Islands. When I returned I found, to my horror, a water bill that higher then I would even pay for an entire year! It turned out that a pipe had burst just outside my property, and I had been billed for it!! Luckily a few of my neighbors had also received the bill and had complained already, so it was sorted out fairly quickly and I ended up not having to pay a cent.
Im no plumber but I reckon that you should go down to your municipality as soon as possible; there may be some sort of mistake (they happen). Also check your water heater, sometimes there is something wrong with the overflow pipe which can cause it to constantly spurt out water.
It's amazing the chances people will take nowadays. It seems like if you don't contest every single charge and every single bill, you will end up paying thousands of quid on services, facilities and products you actually never used or received! I cancelled my gym contract three years ago and only the other day, they called me about an outstanding fee. I know this is false because I settled my account upon leaving! Keep a beady eye on your bills my friends! And always keep those receipts! You can never be too sure!
You wont believe this, I have just received the largest water bill that I have ever had! It is not possible that my flat mate and I have used this amount of water; never in a million baths! I am absolutely fuming! This is the third time that I have had to query bills with the municipality in my area! When will they start hiring people who actually know what they are doing!
Haha! 'Never in a million baths'. That's funny Steve. Maybe they accidentally added an extra zero onto the total bill? I really wouldn't be surprised. I've received anomalous utility bills before; it's a fact of life and all you can do is demand water records for the given month and make sure they match up with the bill. Good luck!
So ot sounds like I need to give the water company a grilling who bills me or who thinks they are going to bill me silly amounts of money and that I will not notice. Ha !. Well this is one customer who has noticed and they are certainly going to get a grilling. I will drop a posting on here when I finally get them sorted.
Looks like Steve has been billed for the whole street in having a bath for about the next ten years from what I read. Oh dear what a carry on so at least it is not just me whom is having a problem.
Its like it says above these companies such as the water company and many other companies all say our standards are so high, yar right. The only thing high about there standards is the bills they send.
Good luck steve in getting your large bill sorted.
Oh that is interesting that you can demand water records for set months now that is worth knowing. I am so glad that I started this topic on here. Right I am off to give the water company pure HELL ! ! !.
