Guttering?
When saving and collecting rooftop rainwater, how often do you have your rooftop guttering cleaned and why?
A general question from the Rainsmart team.
Depends on what you're collecting the water for, but in general it makes sense to clean the guttering out after the fallen leaves have stopped blowing about, as it is mainly these that block gutters.
If you want the rainwater to be clean, you might need to clean the gutters more frequently.Who is responsible for shared guttering?
Our guttering feeds into next doors guttering which has not been maintained for some time. The pipes are obviously blocked which cause rain water to fall on to our flat roof. Is it our responsibility to pay for half of the cost of replacing it? The blocked guttering is all on his property. We have replaced ours. If our neighbour continues to refuse to maintain his property can we take action? Many thanks.
The truth is you should do all you can to protect your property. Guttering is cheap. Water damage is expensive. So call your neighbor and tell them when you have selected three bids to have the gutters repaired. Tell them you'll pay up front and they can reimburse you for half. This way you know the true cost and can be the one to select the best bid.How do I clear a blockage in my guttering downpipe?
Do I need to dismantle the whole guttering system. It doesn't come apart in pieces easily. Any time saving ideas for a DIY novice (and a pretty hopeless one at that!). Thank you in advance!
If your downpipe is already blocked, however, then you will need drainage rods to push through the blockage from above.
These drainage rods can be bought at most DIY stores like B&Q
Simply push the rod down through the downpipe and whatever leaves or debris are causing the blockage will be dispensed at the bottom of the pipe.
How do I clear the angles in my downpipe?
If you need to clear an angled pipe simply use a stiff wire from the top and push downward through the pipe to remove the blockage.
If you can't reach your gutters easily then type 'guttering' into Yellow Pages, followed by your postcode, for a list of professionals in your area who will have all the equipment necessary for the job.
Should you decide to go the DIY route when clearing your gutters, however, take note that the most difficult challenge is if a blockade occurs within the downpipe where you can't see.
A handy tip to prevent this from happening is to place a rolled up ball of chicken wire, or a wire balloon at the point where the gutter meets the downpipe.
This will allow the water the run freely into the drainpipe, but will stop any leaves or debris from going down.
You will need to clear this chicken wire or wire balloon more regularly than once a year as a significant build up of leaves and debris will also take place here. How much for new guttering and drainpipes ?
I live in average size terraced house and need new guttering and 2 new drainpipes. Would like to have a rough idea how much it would cost to have it supplied and fitted.
It should be around £500 no need for scaffold easy enough off a ladder

once so get it done rightHow can I get weeds removed from guttering?
My guttering is almost at the point of collapse I think with overgrown weeds, I am scared of heights so can't get up a ladder myself..... so a daft question, which tradesman can I call to come and remove them?! Just an odd job man?
I don't want to make an idiot of myself phoning someone random!
Our window cleaner always does oursHow much should fitting new fasicas and guttering cost?
I have a 3 bed semi (Northants - UK) with a small attached outbuilding and i want new PVC fascias and guttering -nothing special the standard stuff. How much would you think for somebody to do it?
I've had one quote so far and its has been about 3 times what i expected.
Your suggestions and experiances please - and dont say get more quotes because i will - but i need to know if i am about to be reamed or not
My parents live in Wellingborough and have just had their 4 bed detached re guttered and faschia'd. I believe the cost was a little over £2,000. My Dad is notoriously difficult to please, but he was raving on about the high quality of the job and the efficiency of the guys who did it.
If you would like the tel no. of them, email me and I'll ask my parents who did it.How do I seal the join in straight bit of guttering?
This is a straight bit of guttering that runs along the front of a terrace and my house doesn't have a down pipe so it carries quite a lot of water that tends to leak out from the joint. I have patched it up with epoxy resin some time ago and it didn't do a great job. It has now deteriorated.
It is a plastic gutter.
Exterior Mastik.
It's a black flexible sealant specifically for wet areas. It works like kitchen caulking. You will need to clean all parts to be joined with something like acetone (nail varnish remover) or white spirit.
Run a bead of mastik at the ends of the guttering to be joined and press the connector into place. This should provide a watertight seal that will remain flexible.
Make sure not to let the mastik squeeze up into the guttering itself as this could cause a bump and lead to a blockage. Excess mastik can usually be cleaned off with white spirit BEFORE it dries. Drying usually takes 24 hours.
Epoxy Resin is too rigid and prone to the weather.I need to install guttering, however, I have no drains. What are my rights?
Need to install guttering to stop rain running off on neighbour's out-houses. However, have no drain so, has been suggested to run guttering from downpipe onto neighbours roof so it goes down their drain. Their guttering leaks and needs to be replaced. Surely, as its "their" guttering, they are the ones responsible for that replacement?
downspouts should empty onto the groundHow do I strip cast iron guttering?
I have some reclaimed cast iron guttering that I want to fit on the house. It is old, rusty and covered in layers of paint. How do I remove all the rust and paint to get back to clean bare metal, as quickly and cost efficiently as possible, anyone got ideas? I assume a chemical dip will be the best way, but what is in a chemical dip, what are the actual chemicals I'd need?
You need to remove the rust as well as the old paint. Sand blasting is the best way, it leaves an ideal surface for properly refinishing.who is responsible for replacing guttering in flats?
I own top flat, a landlord owns two flats below, am I solely responsible for the guttering or should the landlord contribute too?
No I do not have a lease, the guttering needs replaced/repaired as rain water pouring down building wall.
its normal to share cost ..if there are 3 flats you should pay a third ..
Well did we have some rain last night or what. Amazingly I had done mine and put the ladder away just as it started to rain.
I was not brave enough to go out and see if they were all fine as the rain came down very, very fast. Anyway it slowed down to some degree and I did stick my head out and yes they are all great until we get some more leafs come down.
Oh well be interesting to see if everyone else has got theres cleaned out ready as I am sure there is more rain to come.
Road Runner ( meep, meep )
I think all that heavy rain we had cleared most of my guttering out for me.
How ever I did find one or two leaks afterwards so I have got them sorted and now seem to be ok again. But as for leafs well if I see another leaf it wont be to soon. Looks like I will be back up the ladder at some point having a look to see if any of the crafty things have jumped in the gutter.

I wonder just how many people just don't bother until it is to late to clean there gutters out. I bet it must cost a thousand or two to get some of the work put right and all the hassle that goes with it.
I saw my neighbor do his guttering recantly and that of course prompted me to go up the ladder as well. Ha. At this rate we will be having a national gutter cleaning week where everyone goes up and cleans theres.
Well at the end of the day you want the water to flow along the gutter and down the pipe not run down the wall and cause loads of damage.

No doubt we will have tons more leafs and anything else floating about in the air to land in the guttering but I know one thing for sure mine are also clear for now and I do not have to worry about my house getting water damage down the wall.
Great advice for all those who have forgot all about it until they read about it.

So at the end of the day we can at least save ourselfs quite a few pounds by doing such as these simple jobs without having to call in the cavalary in to put it right and then you do not know for sure if you are getting Mr Bodge It And Scraper.
Darrell
Keep up the good work everyone.

In saying that it is just my luck that I will get all the leafs from the next county but for the minute they are clear so at least my brick work is safe for now.
I was going to power wash my gutters out but my power wash is written off ( the polite version ). I know there is some bits in it but need to blast it out and give it an extra good clean before the rapid waterfall down the side of the cottage drives me totally mad every time it rains
