Garden Projects

Now is a good time to start some garden project. Although it is a bit wet for some jobs and ok it will make a bit of a mess but by the time things start growing it will all come nice again.

I already have some crokuses looking proud. So I am going to do a bit in my garden while we have a nice day or two. Any boddy else had the same idea to do a bit. It is nice to be able to do a little again rather than have to sit there with the heating flat out to keep warm. It is also a good time to move a plant or two if they need moving before they start budding.

I also have managed to get a few little jobs done as well. Well until the wet stuff came along again. It got a bit muddy so I decided as I had got a fair bit done for now I would leave it again until it dries up a bit but it is certainly the right time to do things then when the spring arrives things should start looking even better.

I also have a load of snow drops that have popped there heads up. Spring is on it's way I would say.

I have got nothing done really apart from clear a few old logs and from near the wheelie bin and that is it. The weather has been to nasty for me to get started and like you say once your in the mud well it just makes a bigger mess than what you started with.

How ever I think I may give the car a good wash today.

We started to do some work outside and oh gosh we seem to have had about a years worth of rain. Every where is just so wet so at the minute we have stopped.

But there was a short spell when we was able to make a start.

Yeah I know what you mean Mouse. I had exactly the same. I had this bright idea I would clean the car and then set on with the next project in the garden as it seemed to be a fairly nice day.

Well that was the easy bit and then I just ended up with a mud bath then had to pack in and leave it for a while now. Will have to see what Sunday is like to see if I can do a little bit then.

Just reading the above comments and it is nice to here that people are trying to get out in the garden and try to make there homes look nice again after the dreadfull winter we have had and I think we are still gettting to some degree.

I have seen many people recantly just doing little bits here and there. How ever when I took my dogs out last night just before bed time there was a layer of frost on the car. I was amazed to see it as we had not had any for a while but there had been many days where it was rather cold.

Good luck to all trying to make there propertys look better as spring is on it's way. lets hope we get a nice summer and we can all enjoy sitting in the grounds of our homes.

We had a little frost where I live but it had soon gone.

I had started to make my water feature bigger and better and I got it done one Sunday and gosh dose it look good. I have a few plants in it already and soon they will look good when they flower.

Looks like we are getting a few more nicer days.

I did notice on the last lot of rain we had I have a gutter leaking. Well it was leaking that much I thought the rain was coming in to my lounge. So I had better go and borrow a ladder and have a look at that to see what has happend there while it is still nice.

  • where can i get a (free) garden project program?

so its for creating ponds, rockerys...., ive heard u can get 3D ones now.
not sure, but try google ( or any search engine) and you should come up with something
  • Can you help with my garden fencing project?

I am replacing my garden fencing with some friends this weekend. It will be shiplap wooden panels with concrete gravel boards and concrete posts.Overall I will be installing 10 6'0" panels.

The garden slopes away from the house and I will have to step down the panels to the bottom end of the garden. Also I will have to start at the top of the garden, where there already is good substantial fencing.

Does anyone have a simplictic way of calculating the step-down I will need for each panel?
you only need to know one thing

how much is the drop in the land from top to bottom of slop

after you have placed the first one in place at the top the slope.
then measure the drop and if you are placing 9 more panels then divide the measurement by 9 and lower each panel by that amount
  • anyone know the price for railway sleepers for a garden project?

hi im after some railway sleepers, anyone know the price of them, need to form a retaining wall. im in brighton sussex, does anyone know of somewhere local, and what cost. cheers.
Anything from £15 to £30 depending on there condition, you can also get new ones, they are a little more expensive but don't have the 'character' of the used ones, shop around because it is one of those items that varies in price from place to place. Good luck.
  • How to I make a garden shed boiler (roughly)?

a say roughly because money is a bit tight, what materials should I use for the outer shell! I know I need to have copper pipes! This is a sort of garden project! And can you talk me through how to make one? Thanks! I do a chemistry degree so I know all/some of the laws and I know roughly how it works and the science!
    Thanks!
Why do you want to boil your garden shed? ho ho!

But seriously, a good start point is a used, empty propane or butane cylinder as a furnace/stove.
You should be very careful if you intend to construct a hot water/steam boiler that is capable of being pressurised, as the potential for catastrophic failure is high (and probably illegal for that reason).
  • What do you use your garden for ?

I am currently doing a project designing garden furniture, and i would like to no how you use your garden.
I would also be interested to know what garden furniture you use in your garden?

Do you have any problems / complaints about existing garden furniture?

Is there any need you have regarding your garden furniture that current products on the market doe's not fulfil?
I don't have any garden furniture, but might consider a bench.

If you want a product idea, find a way to make an inexpensive attractive system for raised gardening beds. There are plenty for sale, but all pretty expensive. There should be a broad audience for a lower price point.
  • Would a work mate be sufficient to do my woodwork projects on?

I won't be able to use my nan's garage anymore, so was thinking of building a thick work bench which could fold up in my shared house's garden, but seems this could be tough to make! If it folded up. If I bought the biggest sturdiest workmate would I be good enough to do projects on like having a door clamped to it or long bits of think wood which needs painting for a bench or a window ledge project I am doing at the moment?
You can try to cover your bench and other patio furniture by some special patio furniture covers.

This is a best way when you do not have special garage to store your patio furniture and other tools.

Quality patio furniture covers will keep your patio furniture against, rain, wet weather, dust, bird droppings, UV rays, etc. It will keep your wood patio furniture dry and in good condition.
  • will you vote for this project so some volunteers can build a wildflower garden?

    http://www.bigchallenge.org.uk/shortlisted_entry.aspx?id=b9cc5539-d13b-419b-b244-f385fd20983a

votes would be very much appreciated. shall give you a thumbs up and points and everything!
Thanks for the votes so far.

It hasn't closed (what they mean is they are no longer accepting new ideas, just voting for the top 30). The vote closes Wednesday.
The page DOES NOT say it is closed.
Brilliant idea and I voted for it.
    Good Luck with this. :-)
  • do you have any garden seeds or bulbs to spare?

i am a member of a mental health group which does a gardening project 1 day a week and i was wondering if anyone would be interested in sending the group some free seeds as this would help us to fund our group so much we currently have 50 people a week atending thanks
your best bet is to contact your local gardening club and/or county extension agent. This forum is not the best place for your question. You might also try your local branch of freecycle.
  • How do I work out how many litres of water it takes to fill a garden pond? I have a pond of 12m x 9m.?

I'm putting in a pond. I'm at the scoping out stage of the project. Armour cable, filter, pump etc. What I need to know is what size pump would I need if my pond is 12m x 9m? I'm intending to keep a few fish and garden plants.
12 X 9 X 1(?) = 108 cubic meters = 108,000 litres for a pond of 1 m deep. Wow that's a big pond. If the pond is 2 m deep that would be 216,000 litres, even bigger pond. Are you sure its not a swimming pool?

    Good Luck

  • I have a garden which is the size of a tennis court, but can not afford to fix it, where can i find some help?

It has a broken fence, it is alittle over grown but mostly clear. It is the ideal space for a large creative project. I need help, it has been this way if not worse for the past 10 years but i am hoping someone can help me to stop a very good garden from going to waste!
You could get out and do the manual labour to clear the weeds and till out the soil etc... once you have that amount done, you may well get the incentive to get some small amount of money together to tackle smaller projects like fixing the fence. if i had that kind of a garden, i'd convert it into a tennis court. all you need is a shovel, wheelbarrow, and about $1000
