Should i spend £10k on my families safety?
OK, i have a large 25 room detached house in Surrey and down my road fairly similar houses have been burgled over the past few weeks. I have 2 dogs but i doubt they would attack a burglar should they break in. I was wondering if i should invest in a cctv system and invest around £10k into the safety and security systems on my property. I would be paying for:
12 CCTV cameras located in different places on the property.
A 25 bolt fire security safe,
6ft high electric gates,
Several firearms
and a concealed stair case that runs down the side of the house on all 4 floors that leads to a room that we already have in the basement that is made of 8inch thick solid steel.
Am i going overboard or am i just concerned about my families safety?
P.S We also have family friends who have been burgles 3 times in the past 2 years and their kids are so scared of it happening again that they have hired an armed security guard to watch their house at night, but their house is worth around £9million so i feel that would be taking it a step too far...
You won't get all that for £10K - and you may have trouble getting a firearms certificate given your intended purpose. Why shouldn't I move to Mombasa Kenya from uk?
Mombasa & kenya is full of great opportunities, its up & coming, more than likely will be doing some sort of restraunt business. However, people keep telling me its unsafe & I should value my life, its bureaucratic & corrupt, which it may be but things do get done. Would welcome good & bad points esp abt safety, security, conmen & obviously new opportunities with EAst african community / South Sudan.
I do have a family & kids so would app any articles relating to families. schools i know should be ok as long as you pay, however would prefer ISlamic education for kids as well as worldly. Also have considered moving to Saudi.
Good points in my op:
things get done
relaxed pace of life
lots to do if you want to
good standard of living vs cost
opportunities plentiful if you have money
skilled workforce
peace of mind
similar to uk system
Bad points:
Security - even though i will be in gated community in Bamburi
High electric costs/power cuts
conmen
tough sometimes unfair competition in business
Elections soon may cause security issues
Bad roads
Appreciate specific experiences good n bad
Wait! Did you say you prefer iSLAMIC education for your kids? Well, there are a dozen islamic schools in Mombasa, you are good to go. As for South Sudan, stay away. You are not welcomed. We've had enough of muslims. Your religion-first attitude wouldn't be of much help in Juba.
All in all, you are better off in Saudi Arabia. Your condescending outlook gives you away. To make it in kenya (or Africa), you need a pretty open mind that ignores all the perceived 'risks in Africa' that you seem to uphold. kenya is stable. People do business and succeed. To make your decision, spend some time in Kenya first. A tour is okay. Experience helps. Good luck :)Hydro-electric power generation in UK?
It's probably already been thought of and dismissed by the powers that be, but I was curious, given the very high profile of "green" power generation, why don't the Government and utilities businesses install some type of electricity generation at some, if not all, reasonably sized wiers and sluice-gates here in the UK - there's literally 1000's of them, most of which have a sizeable amount of water flowing through with some considerable force all year - surely they can make a significant contribution to local electricty consumption with little impact on the environment? I know of one locally to me that has, well, must be millions of gallons roaring and surging through all day, every day.
Or, and I've just thought of this just now, given that there's always a steady flow of "fluid" through the drains & sewers of towns & cities, can this not also be harnessed & harvested for electricity generation in the same way?
Proven, safe and reliable.
Are any new ones being built?
Interesting question.
One thing about hydro is you either need a high volume of water, or high "head," (long vertical drop to create higher pressure) to generate significant amounts of energy.
In other words, a large volume of water moving fast or lots of pressurehas the potential to generate a lot of energy.
Small hydro units are sometimes installed in drainage ditches here in the US. Although they don't generate huge amounts of energy, they are sometimes cost effective. Why not log on to your local utility's website and ask them?please can anyone help me?
I live on a main road, the road is on a straight run and on the down side there is a single yellow line allowing parking except during peak periods ie 7am to 9am and 4pm to 6pm the up side outside my terraced house has a double yellow line and therefore no parking is allowed at any time there is a large house opposite the terrace behind a wall 300 ft long and eight ft high running alongside the pavement and road and the person who lives there has applied for planning permission to erect large electric gates into their grounds opposite the terraced houses where I live this means that they will also apply for white lines to be painted either side of their drive in order for them to have a clear view of traffic travelling from their right hand side, every house in the terrace parks on the road because they do not have vehicular access I understand that if permission goes ahead mean that we as residents will have to park about 3/4mile away can anyine tell me what is the maximum length of white line that can be painted either side of the drive,
it would be normal to paint white marking outside the length of access only surely . 2) what is the speed of approach to the drive either side 3) it would be normal not to mark unless there is a constant flow of traffic i.e. a transfer of use from residential to commercial or conversion to apartments 4) even given the amount of traffic the " visibility splay " is important i.e. the view an emerging driver has to emerge onto the main road so it may limit any parking restrictions proposed 5) the volume of traffic would be considered as it may restrict the waiting period to peak times 6) consideration for the terraced properties could at this stage be borne in mind and a vacant area given over to residents parking or a residents parking scheme introduced 7) lots to think about so start thinking and get together to get the best scheme for yourselves following amendment 8) the big danger is emerging traffic turning right egressing the property following the proposed works . good luck i'll try and brush up , could a one way system be introduced . edit - expand please on upside and downside and straight run ? edit 2 i think i understand - on an incline but straight but how far is the peak of the hill as that may dictate certain matters if drivers cant see traffic emerging from the drive due to them coming over the hill and the proposed drive does not have good visibility approaching it . edit 3 ) large electric gates suggests vehicles waiting to gain access on the road which would give problemsBest Way to Set Up a Maximum Distance LAN?
I will be visiting my mother around Christmas and will be there for about 6 to 8 weeks. The dialup service available is beyond comprehension. I think they have let the quality of it go down so people will use their DSL service.
Their DSL is 35 bucks a month, which I don't have a problem with, but they want 100 bucks to install it. I understand that each telephone jack has to have a filter on it. I don't see paying 135 dollars for one or one and a half month's Internet service.
My sister lives across the road and had to call the telephone company out to repair her telephone line. They also handle the DSL. The telephone repairman said that if they got a wireless router, put an antennae on it and I got an antennae, I could run off their connection.
This is in the country and there would be no one nearby. I have a wireless router, but I don't have a wireless card which I know I'd have to have. What type of antennae is he talking about and what's the best route to go? We're talking about a block and a half distance.
I had heard somewhere that one can't plug in a router to another router. If that's possible, I could run an Ethernet cable from my sister's house closer to my mother's house. Because of an electric gate at the road, there would be an electrical hookup for the router.
I'm wondering, if say, I run cable to this router closer my mother's house, place it higher up and in a fairly water proof situation, would I be able to receive a signal about 500 feet away?
Or, is it better, as the telephone repairman said to run two antennae?
well i would advise getting a class N wireless router with detachable aerials, since connecting routers together can get very tricky, and cost more than $135. so you would take off the aerials from the router and then you can attach some strong external wifi units. like 8dBi 2.4GHz Wireless Networking Directional Yagi Antenna there is also some good sites that help explain large range wireless connection http://www.technologyreview.com/infotech/20432/For Metal Heads what's your best among the best metal songs listed here...?

Hello I am 13 and I wrote this story at Christmas. Mum says she loves it but as my mum she has to say that. Please respond with what you think!
BEHIND THE WALL:
I regularly visit my father’s grave. It is in the corner of the graveyard, underneath a big oak tree that towers over any of my father’s visitors, waiting impatiently for them to leave and casting them in darkness until they do so. I don’t like doing it, walking past the new graves, ones from over 100 years ago, the babies’ graves, the mourners with their wreaths, flowers, toys, banners, letters and all sorts of things that were ‘given’ to their lost one.
I like going there late at night, jump over the stone wall and walk over to his dwelling place. Usually it’s cold and I bring a torch with me. I don’t mind it though. I sometimes talk to him. It is a stupid thing to do, but I can’t help doing it. He needs to know things, about my sister’s husband, my mum’s drinking and the football scores! Had I been talking to his face I can imagine that he would have appreciated it. At least I hope so.
So this is where I was on a cold November night, sitting on the wall opposite the exit and talking to him about mum: her drinking habits, telling me I should get married, asking me who I am, telling me that I should get away from the village and carry on with my life etc. I’m sure he was listening, I could feel it.
Then I felt something different... something unnatural. My cheeks tingled; with the cold or with fear I don’t know. There was a rustle behind me and I fell off the wall in my haste to look round. My breathe caught in my throat. Then there was screaming. A deafening scream filled my ears and bore its way into my head, my very soul. This was no ordinary scream like when kids pull each other’s hair. This was a truly terrible, blood curdling scream, filled with pain and anguish like none I had ever heard before. Before I knew what was happening I was crouched on the floor, my head pressing against the wet, dewy grass. But this didn’t help. An electric surge came out of the ground and through my head, my spine and the tips of my feet. Now I felt like screaming but I couldn’t... sound wouldn’t come. Electricity was flowing through my body draining me of energy. The pain was incredible, showing no mercy. I was writhing on the wet grass...
Then it all stopped, the screaming, the pain, everything. It was gone. I could hear my breath, loud and deep. I looked around; nothing was there. I scrambled up and backed away, looking at the place over the wall where the sound came from. Nothing. Then there was a crunch and I was on my back. I had tripped over a small gravestone. I looked up at the sky. Nothing but clouds. Then I glanced back at my father’s grave. I swear my heart stopped. My internal organs froze. My head was filled with fear.
There was a woman. Behind the wall. She stood there. Eyes boring into me. I daren’t move. Everything about her was dead, long...Very good. It has my attention and I want to know what happens next. Your description of the tree "being impatient for mourners to leave" the cemetery was unexpected and very nice writing. The woman was genuinely scary. Hope the 2nd half answers the questions you have set up!Hydro-electric power generation in UK?

Missed opportunity, me thinks.
Just an idea.....
The thing is, they're alreadt built, so the impact would be minimum. Seems like a crime not to make best use of these things.
You have very valid point, but, It is too obvious and simple of an idea for government in this country to comprehend or act upon, because we are governed by people who are too busy thinking of other ways to tax the people, rather than to think of something constructive like producing cheaper forms of energy. For Metal Heads what's your best among the best metal songs listed here...?

A typical council. It sounds like they have got nothing better to do with there time and as for the person going running to the council must really have a sad life indeed.
I bet they even got the tape measure out to check the height of the gates.
Fred
Well if they are moaning they are 6" to high get the angle grinder out and chop 6" off and then put a bit of paint on that should stop them moaning at you.
