Eco Frindley Ideas / Products

I had been looing online to see what eco product and ideas are about and I found this lot.

There was a old whisky barrle made in to a water but to catch all the rain water and of course use it to water the plants. I would need at least 4 of them to make it work but that is something I will have to look in to.

Oh yeah there was an eco kettle to my amazement. If I remember it said you fill it up all 1.5ltr of it and push a plunger to let the required of water out to boil. Urm. I want more than one cup of coffee in the space of an hour. Besides all you have to do is boil what you need in your present kettle.

Solar pannles. I looked at this and it said gives off small amount of electric but it then said you could add more. I think the one device on its own was about £500 region.

It also said about energy saving light bulbs. Well I already have those in every light fitting in the cottage.

So a few things there for eco friendly I thought I would share with you all.

Ok then who has got everything possible in there home to make it eco friendly. Not everyone has large amounts of money but I am sure there is plenty who would like to do more. Would be really nice to here back on this forum to see who has got what and what they would like to do next
Can't wait to see the replies come back on this one.

Smile Those are some really great eco things you have found there. I think I would draw the line at the eco kettle though.

I like the idea of the solar pannle but they are so costly to buy, may be if they came down a lot in price I could look in to it then.
The whisky barrle as a water butt is good but I think I need at least four of them and I would get a decant pump then attach it to the hose in the tub and water the whole garden, well the plants that needed it anyway.

Ah now energy light bulbs I also have them in every socket in the house. I try not to use to much electric as I pay the bill so yes they certainly save some money as well and plus it means less electric that has to be produced by the power stations so that one is good all round.

If anyone else see's any other eco products or ideas then put them up on this thread as they would be really great to here about even if they are low or high priced.

I think we have to be carefull about buying these eco products otherwise we are going to end up with a load of stuff that we will never use.
I have adopted a policy where as if I see something and it says it is eco friendly and all that sort of stuff. I now think do I have something fitting this item. do I need one and what it save me etc as well as the planet and so on.

Yes there are some good things out there but like Mark commented on the solar panel for hot water is so costly. I would have it but can not afford to purchase it at that price so i shall wait until it comes down in price.

I have got energy saving lights in my home. Just as well as everyone leaves the damn things on. They seem to know how to turn them on but not off.

I have bad news for you gofa: the price of solar panels is not anticipated to come down in the near future. If you actually consider the amount of skill and the quality of the resources that goes into their manufacture, their price may not bother you so much! Plus, you fail to consider how much they will save you on electricity bills!

Solar panels have an average lifetime of 20 to 30 years and if you are conservative with the amount of electricity you use, you need not ever pay another electricity bill! Surely that's worth thinking about! They may be expensive in the short term, but as a long term investment, solar panels are the smartest way to go! The sun's energy is free and it's all around us, not to mention 100% clean! Let's use it and stop polluting the Earth's environment and atmosphere with our excessive carbon emissions!

Talking about eco-friendly ideas... you can now buy rotating compost drums! So if you don't like the idea of digging a hole in your garden, you can just shove all your used vegetable matter and biodegradable wastes into the drum! You can also buy worms to put in your compost heap to keep the soil nice and healthy. Interesting, hm? And not expensive at all!

Ha ha! Nice idea! A rotating compost drum... with worms!! I was doing it the old fashioned way: with a spade and a hole in the ground. I found that worms naturally congregated in the nutrient-rich soils of the compost heap, so no need to buy them! Although I can understand that a quick start is more desirable who don't have the time or effort to dedicate to daily attention and gardening!

Yeah, I have actually seen one of those it is a large plastic drum that you put all of your vegetable peels and grass cuttings into. The earthworms then break it all down into compost! The compost that comes out in the end is very rich and nutritious and is best used in vegetable gardens. Ah the circle of life; you feed the earthworms and in return they will enable you to feed yourself!

These are all great ideas... But you guys will be amazed at what's available out there if you're of the eco-friendly type! What is most shocking is that they receive so little advertising that virtually none of us really get to hear about them... like the rotating compost drum for example. What a great idea, but until now, I'd never heard about them!
