How long can goldfish go without feeding during a cold spell?
Since you're not supposed to feed goldfish when the water temperature is below 4 degrees C then if they are in a pond, and there is a prolonged cold spell during the winter, how long can they go without feeding before they die or it badly affects their health?
When the water is really cold the fishes metabolism goes so slow that they don't need food. It's important in the summer to feed them well so they have fat stored for the winter. They can go for months in hibernation with no food.
**How are you coping in this cold spell?
I have my sleeping bag with a quilt on top in my living room to mamise the heat in one place. I also only open the curtains a bit during the day to reduce heat loss.
I am double glazes, in a flat with heat from below and the sides and the house is still cold. It was minus 13 the other morning.
Sleeping bag and a quilt? I've slept in a tent 4000m up mountains, and been hot in a sleeping bag, let alone a quilt as well! That's crazy, it must be really cold where you are.
I have the heating on (stuff all this about the gas supplies running low, I have a full tank of oil in my garden) and a well stocked fridge (tesco's made a delivery on Friday). I've been driving to work in my car, through all the snow, and the only trouble I've had is parking on my drive (which is like an ice sheet) - then again I tend to spend a lot of time in France in the Alps during the winter, so I'm used to driving on snow and ice.
To be honest, the only trouble I've had is with kids from the local primary school building snowmen on my front lawn. We've had about 4inches of snow, and are expecting more, but to be honest, nothing much has changed apart from wearing gloves and a scarf when I go out for me. I do have my grandfather living with me, however, and it is very difficult for him because he can't walk far anyway, and with all the ice he hasn't left the house in days, and is getting rather annoyed about it! I would be worried about him if he was on his own, but to be honest as he's here, it's not too bad. As long as it doesn't last for too much longer, we should be fine.
Nice excuse to have the fires going in the living room and dining room, though.what is the best rigs, baits etc to use for cathing pike during the uk cold spell?
ive been fishing a few waters lately that are still partly froze with limited success, ive also joined some sites like http://www.thefishingcabin.co.uk/ to get more info, the info im getting is very varied but what is the most productive method at these times ?
I like to leger a deadbait (I use either mackerel tails or smelts) on a paternoster rig. I had an eleven pounder last weekend using this setup, although the pike are currently quite slow and torpid as a result of the cold weather.
Here are some simple rigs to try.
http://www.pacgb.co.uk/tips/simplerigs.htmlAre you planning an outdoor party for the weekend to celebrate the end of the cold spell?
I'm starting to clear the snow off the barbeque.
the temp went up today from minus 15 to minus 7. I already got my bikini on, its positively roasting here. Why are climate change sceptics being admonished for suggesting the current cold spell dispels global warming?
....When you know for a fact, that if we were having a mild winter, the believers would be claiming it as undeniable proof
Thanks Amy, although I do feel your answer indicates you don't have a solid grasp of the question.
Because it doesn't. And here's part of the underlying problem: you say, "....When you know for a fact, that if we were having a mild winter, the believers would be claiming it as undeniable proof." That is not a known fact-actually, the believers are basing part of their belief on multi-year and global temperature averages, rather than regional or local weather.
I personally think the skeptics and deniers are really struggling to make valid points. Part of it is linguistics and what appears to be-on the part of many-a lack of understanding language coupled with multiple other dsyfunctions like logic, statistics, human psychology and other issues.
The issue for me is just how valid ARE the global temperature average measurements from year to year? And unfortunately, the hacked emails publicized recently undermined some of the scientific credibility of all climate researchers, leading to two questions: Number 1)-is the average measurement accurate enough over a long enough period of time to indicate a statistically significant variance from natural processes that cannot be explained by anything other than mankind's activities? Obviously, a very large contingent of scientists believe that it is and does indicate just that. The second question then becomes, have agenda-driven climate scientists "cooked the books" to show that variance?
The burden of proof falls on both sides of the argument; those who believe that AGW is occurring have to present enough evidence and make the data available-as well as the procedures used to arrive at the figures-to convince the majority of people that it is mankind's activities that are accelerating and driving the warming that is being reported. Those who do not believe in AGW have to produce evidence that will create reasonable doubt.
"The current cold spell" does not create reasonable doubt, and "the weather" in wherever has been brought up again and again and again and again ad nauseum in this forum and elsewhere, and the believers are frustrated with the proposition that local weather over the short term is a credible argument when it isn't to the point of being foolish, so people who bring it up in the way it is brought up so frequently brought up are often admonished.
The people who don't believe in AGW have to get their acts together, get hold of the temperature research and measurements that produce the global averages, and disprove those figures. That is the only way the non-believers are going to prove their point-everything else is just hearsay and political yakkity-yak, and that is why the anti-AGW crowd is losing the debate-they're following the right wing playbook and arguing about weather, Al Gore, the temperature on Mars and on and on instead of arming themselves with significant information and debating. That style of dialogue has recently failed in politics and I really don't see why anyone expects it to work in science.Have you seen any Bluetits during this cold spell?
I've been in the garden with my binoculars but haven't seen any yet.
Yep, I have a fine pair................................. that come to my garden every day. My neighbour even puts out his fat balls for them to peck on.!!Will this cold spell we are expecting this weekend here in the UK kill the daffodils that are poking through ?
in my herbaceous borders. Should i ask the gardener to cover them over.
No, daffodils are very hardy plants, as are snowdrops. In this cold spell, is there something you would like to keep you warm?
I am quite chilled, what could you recommend for me too ?
You and me, a duvet (of the non-feathered variety), a warm bed...
What else could we ever want for?
Hee heeUK: Why is it that the longer the cold spell goes on the higher Lord Adonis's voice gets?
When the Secretary of State for Transport was interviewed last week he seemed very quite calm, controlled and measured (really good to see this in a leader).
His latest interview on BBC TV - last night and this morning his voice is up half an octave and he's rattling out words like a machine gun.
Perhaps he should be wearing thermal long-johns! Yes, you're right though, he's been metaphorically 'caught with his trousers down' and he's more than embarrassed. Mind you though, with all the MPs focusing their minds on their expenses and global warming i suppose he's found it hard to think about cold weather and what it would do to our country and economy! With the current cold spell (UK) two of my neighbours houses have no frost on their roofs.Should I tell them?
It's very obvious that their loft insulation,if they have any,is totally inadequate. As a committed environmentalist, and also to help them save money, should I tell them what to do about it?They both have their central heating on.The temperature here is currently - 6 degrees C.They are also friends of mine.
Masha.
Perhaps you might as well let them know although Mr Brown might introduce a "tell on your neighbour policy" and have the police helicopter flying above looking for the tell tale signs of carbon wasters!
I also heard most people are aware that the UK Met Office has in recent years become something of a laughing stock. Its much-derided forecast that Britain would enjoy a "barbecue summer" this year was only the latest of a string of predictions that proved wildly off-target. Three years ago it announced that 2007 would be "the warmest year ever", just before global temperatures plunged by 0.7 degrees Celsius, more than the world's entire net warming in the 20th century. Last winter, it forecast, would be "milder and drier than average", just before we enjoyed one of our coldest and snowiest winters for years. And in 2009 it promised us one of the "five warmest years ever", complete with that "barbecue summer", when temperatures have been struggling to reach their average of the past three decades.

Well I don't have oil but I have some gas so I think I will be getting a bit more in just to top up with. In saying that the last two days have been rather cold and I think I am duse for more gas.
Damn British weather. Think I should move to a warmer country, never known it be so cold.
Fingers crossed that we do not get anymore snow. I can just about cope with the cold days they are bad enough.
Give it time the UK will slow down and someone will say that it is the wrong type of cold weather for the country.
Road Runner ( meep, meep )
Think you have hit the nail on the head Roadrunner.
That sounds about right for this country, that being the wrong type of cold weather we are having things have slowed down.
Well so far we seem to be doing ok in that no more snow has arrived from where ever it is the rotten stuff comes from. We just need it to warm up a bit more now and dry the place out.
Darrell
Guess there is still plenty of time for it to snow and freeze yet as we are only in February yet.
Lets hope it stays like it is. A bit cool some days but surely it has to get warmer and we can all continue to carry on without freezing to much.
Marcus
Well the cold spell seems to be easing off now. We have had a few windy days and gosh was they windy then we got the rain. I guess the rain is better than the frost and snow as you don't have to have the heating on so much so that will save us all a bit of money.
