Chimney Sweep

Hey all it is that time of year again. For those of us who have a chimmney that has smoke go up it then we all need to think about getting it swept before they start getting used a lot.

You will be amazed how much soot can form on a chimmney wall. So what you do not want is a big build up and if it gets hot enough it will set on fire then you have a very big problem so if not cleaned already don't put it off get it done. I think mine was £30 each but he let me off with a £5 as a they were easy to clean and he had got next doors as well.

Hey there is an idea if you have a neighbor that needs a chimmney cleaning at the sametime get the person out and see if you can get a discount you may be able to save a few quid.

Good thinking Marcus to put that on here about getting the chimmney swept now and more so as we are all needing a fire, well all of us who still have fires.

I had mine done at the back end of the summer so they are all nice and clean again and I have a cowl on them to stop any damn bird getting down the thing. I don't fancy roast black bird may be one of the bosses roast pheasants would be ok.

So come on you lot get the chimmney swept before it is to late and you are cleaning soot up for a week or more.

Smile Just had mine done well about 3 weeks ago. You should have seen all the soot that was removed. I was totally amazed.

I asked to keep the soot as I have put it on the garden. That should do it some good.

Well at least I now know all three chimmneys are nice and clean again.

So yeah don't put it off until it is to late. I have never been caught out as I always have them done every year. Cool

Smile I have one of those log burning stoves with a liner. I should like to stress that if you get a sweep to clean it make sure they know what they are doing as you can soon dislodge the liner.

I have spoke to one company about cleaning the chimmney and they said the soonest they can do it is about mid day Christmas eve. So don't think oh it will be ok for a while get it done now as it would seem eveyone else is trying to get theres done so they are ok for the winter.

Smile I also have one of those log burning stoves and I have contacted the people who installed it and they said they have a man that can clean the liner on it without damaging it.

They said it was more specialised job as apposed to just cleaning a normal chimmney.

So yeah good advice. If you have one make sure you get someone who knows what it is they are doing.

Smile Well it is nice to see that people are getting there chimmneys cleaned before the winter sets in to much as it is getting rather cold now and we do need the heat to keep warm.

I have seen the soot come down the chimmney. It dose not just stop at the bottom it comes out all over the carpet and just goes every where and I mean every where.

So good on you all for thinking ahead. Well there may be people who have read this and not become a member on here yet but lets hope they have took action . Smile

  • chimney sweep devon, anyone know a good 1?

chimney sweep, i live it chillaton lifton.
    looking for a good 1.
    Hi Chillaton, Broadwoodwidger responding.
There is a dearth of them, isn't there? Can't see any in the Okey Times, but there are two advertising in the current Cornish and Devon Post, p16, one in Otterham Station, one with a Beaworthy phone number. Don't know anything about either, husband has his own brushes, and does ours himself.
There is a good classified section in the Western Morning News on Sats, don't know if there will anything there later today.
  • What is lucky about seeing a chimney sweep on your wedding day?

The tradition of a chimney sweep bringing the bride and groom luck on their wedding day is one that goes back many years.

Legend has it that 200 years ago a chimney sweep bravely stepped out and stopped the King's horse and coach as it bolted. King George II was so grateful to the sweep for saving his life that he announced by Royal Decree that all sweeps were lucky!

Today, seeing a chimney sweep on your wedding day is still a lucky omen and many couples choose to have them attend their wedding for a handshake for the groom and a lucky kiss for the bride.
  • What are the career prospects for an enthusiastic chimney sweep in London?

The chimney sweep that came to me said he is getting busier due to increasing gas/electric bills, more people are going back to open fires and a huge rise in the use of wood-burning / multi-fuel stoves.- All requiring his services.
  • my daughter is getting married next Saturday she wants me to pay to have a chimney sweep be outside the church?

Has anyone ever done this. They say it is lucky. my friends father was a sweep years ago. Would he do? Dick Van Dyke may be dear. any ideas of the cost? or is it a bad idea ?
My son and his bride had one for their wedding about five years ago, I'm not superstitious myself but if your daughter wants one why not indulge her.

The sweep at my son's wedding was one of my daughter in law's friends and proved very popular, as a wedding photographer I did their photographs and have seen them at several others.

As to the cost, your friend's father sounds perfect, but if not I'm sure you could get one of your friends to do it, paying for one should be considered a last resort and won't be as popular as one of the guests, it's the sort of thing I'd love to do as a favour.
  • Does anyone know about the superstition that it was lucky to see a chimney sweep on the way to a baptism?

enigmatics wrong again. It is supposed to be a wedding , not baptism. Sorry about this. My credability is slowly flying out of the window! I may have mis spelt that cred word. What the heck?
Ive heard its lucky for a chimney sweep to blow you a kiss.
  • Why is it supposed to be lucky to kiss a chimney sweep on your wedding day?

Tradition has it that 200 years ago, a chimney Sweep saved the life of King George II by stopping his runaway horse and carriage. The King issued a Royal Decree that Chimney Sweeps are bringers of luck and should be treated with the greatest of respect. So started the tradition and because sweeps are lucky, couples would arrange to meet the sweep at their Wedding.
