Get Away From The Rat Race

bordercollie's picture

How to get away from the rat race and other human beings.

It is simple. What you do is go and rent a holiday let in the middle of no where for about six months. Rent plenty of months and you may get a good rate to rent at.

You then rent your house out to the worst neighbors ever for six month at a silly rate and of course get the money up front. You could do this for another six months at a different location also in the middle of no where.

Well I thought this was a most excellent idea. You could also do it for 3 months and just move every three months around the country and get to see lots of different areas.

Simple's

Ha, Ha. That is pure quality. I like that idea. Urm may be make some money as well in the process. Hey you could almost have a year long holiday at that and more so if you worked from home and only need a laptop with internet signal then you are laughing.

Smile Pleased you like my wild idea I had. Had told it to a few other people I know and they also thought it was a rather good idea.

In fact one went as far to say that you could rent your home for a high rent and live in spain for six months of the year or something.

What a clever idea but sadly for me I already rent the place I live in so no doubt it is my landlord with the big wallet in his pocket off on holiday and having the time of his life.

If you really planned it out I bet you could do rather well out of that smart idea.

Nice idea there. Lets all rent our homes out at a good rate and go and have a good holiday and have a few quid to come back to as well.

  • Have you ever wished you could get away from the rat race and live a nomadic life style?

and if you have already tried it, how would you describe it?
To an extent; I've always wanted to just hop into my car and go from place to place getting odd jobs to pay my way, see the country and just live life. Once I get my school loans payed off, I may just do it.
  • Where in the UK Could One Go to Get Away From the Rat Race?

Is there anywhere fairly quiet you could live, but not remote like the Scottish Islands. Where taffic is light, shops and night spots are still reasonably available (maybe within an hour or so), and you can get jobs, but commuting is easy, there are not too many people, there's a community spirit, it's a bit old fashioned. Is there anywhere left?
Anyone know anything about East Anglia, Isle of Man or Northern Ireland?
Definitely the Isle Of man, its £30.00 on the boat to liverpool each way, so normal rat race civilisation is not that far away. There is low unemployment, lower taxes, sea within a few minutes wherever you are, quiet roads,, lovely local pubs, a few clubs, not many, Hilton Casino(if you like that kinda thing) steam trains around all summer season, if you don.t want the bus, horse drawn carriages up the promenade all summer, T.T. madness in April...................love it here.....low crime rate, just a quiet sleepy island really without being too out of the way, plane 20 minutes too. try it................bet u like it, Good for young couples to start off here, the pensions and stuff are all better, hospitals are good, and we have no university here so my daughters tuition fees are paid by th I.O.M. government, less chance of any debt, we pay her digs and food! thats it.....not sure what length of schooling here is required before you get that I think its 5 years to become a manx resident..... and you will need a work permit for a while, that requires a bit of research on your behalf, i don't think it's complicated.... it's just nice to jump in you car and go and watch the seals on the rocks and the fishing boats come in, and if you like walking you will be in Heaven.....
  • Where can i Live and TRUELY be free, away from the nanny states like the UK?

I'm so sick and tired of being told how to live my life.. when i should get up, what i should do in the day, and the mind numbing propaganda that is continuously spouted in the news and TV in general.

So my question is a simple one. Where can I live in this would and be truly free. Free to live from the fat of the land, and have an uncomplicated life??? I really can not take the rat race any longer .... i hate it!!!
Somalia is a good bet. Has not had a functioning government for quite a few years so its every man for himself.

It works both ways though. Whilst you'll be able to do what you like, most of your time will be taken up with surviving and if you get hurt, don't expect the local witch doctor to have a CAT scanner tucked away in his mud hut.

Estonia is also considered to be the most libertarian country in the world and unlike Somalia does have a functioning government and employment prospects.

Within the US, your best bet is New Hampshire. NH has very strong support for Libertarian beliefs and the state motto is "Live Free or Die"

I'm with you, I wish the government would get out of my life and take its cameras and taxes with it. 1984 was not supposed to be a guide book.
  • I'm considering becoming a sloth in a zoo. But what would I get fed?

I need to get away from it all - and I reckon sloths have the best, most care-free existence of all the primates. They do practically nothing all day long but just hang around in trees smiling about life. I have a dirty old fake-fur coat of a suitable shade of brown, and I've been practising the sloth's trademark dreamy expression. I'm sure if I slip into my local safari park under cover of darkness one night, I could make a comfy nest for myself in a tree and - Hey Presto! - I'll have a cushy job for life as a sloth and never have to pay bills or be responsible for anything ever again. To explain the unexpected appearance of a new animal in the zoo, I would leave a note at the gate; saying something like "Please look after my pet sloth 'Hairy Lefty', as it's got too big to hang off my washing line now".
As you can see, I've got my new life all worked out - except for my diet, that is. I'm not sure what sloths eat in the wild so I don't know what I should expect my keepers to feed me. Do you think if I put in the explanatory note "Likes Chinese" they would bring me vegetarian selections from the nearby 'Blossom Gardens' takeaway?
Can you think of anything else I might've overlooked?
Oh and btw, if any of you out there are feeling like escaping from the rat race too, you're welcome to come and join me and form our own semi-wild pack...
What is the collective term for sloths?
Lots of wonderful, knowledgeable, and helpful suggestions here. Many, many thanks, friends.
Moreover, I am delighted to note that I'm far from alone in my desire to escape the rotten old rat-race and pootle over into life's sloooo-o-o-o-w lane.
Well, it's a big tree and you're all welcome.
But now - to the near impossible task of choosing Best Answer ...
Well, you have definitely picked the easy life.
From the noted reference book "101 Amazing Sloth Facts, For Entertaining"..

"The sloth is the world's slowest mammal, so sedentary that algae grows on its furry coat."
    -------------------------------------
I cannot find the grouping name listed
    but I will guess
    a "slew"
a "slew"(alternate spelling "slough") of sloths
    ---------------------------------------------------

As for diet...you may nibble on some of the algae growing on your coat, inbetween meals consisting of:

"leaves, buds and stems" (coool!, as Butthead would have said it)

your nearest relatives are the aardvark
    and the armadillo

you will be expected to hang upside down from trees all the time (or else they may begin to suspect you might be a woman in a fur coat)
If this occurs, throw your poop at them

(Oh did I forget to mention that?
Yes, another fringe benny of slothhood is the poop throwing
    -not unlike monkeys-

this is convenient because you will never need to climb down from the tree to get a rock
and poop is a "less lethal" weapon, so considered humane

and this makes you a very cool animal indeed

...you should practice making the mating call though
    (they do that a lot)

and, oh, how can I put this delicately...perhaps you should sew up the back of your coat, tightly.
  • the Rat Race is over, we can live our lives as human beings once more?

I write to you today as a person in this world just like you, yet I have wrote this unlike you, I do so, not for fame or commission, I write in fear. fear of us all not knowing what is going on in our name, all around us,
how many things do you know in your life that you most enjoy cost actual paper money. I know none, but, those experiences I so treasure, are hindered by it regardless. and that is my question.
money, as we know it, what we use to trade goods with others, is owned by a company, it has nothing to do with england. or English people. yet they take the very joy from are best moments. I say this.
yes, we are all proud to have a run at the ratrace. but the truth is its monopoly, and the banker draws his own cash. and owns all the property's. he will lend you money at the start. even give you some, but all you earned will All, end up in his tray when your piece is off the board. this would be a thing to oh well, so what, but are kids are next, and the banker has now changed the rules. he is not given out as much paper money with his head on, he is collecting, are kids now face a run on the bored that are darlings have no chance, and thats not fair, down with a few men grabbing hold of the bankers tray, what use is it to you when you pass away, what amount of suffering caused will add just one day to your alloted span, right now the queens advisor. Evelyn Rothchild and his company, the corporation of london, have an estimated 250 trillion pounds from owning our monopoly board, they have won,, congratulations. you have tricked, lied and scammed to get every last drip of blood from my generation, well done, your determination needs to be admired, don't underestimate the our love for our children and loved ones. your reign on are very lives is over.
This is not a question, it's a rant!
  • I want to act or record but I don't want fame. What do I do?

I absolutely love acting, I love being able to walk in someone else's shoes and forget about my life while being them. I love being able to express such variety of emotion that I never could. There's a freedom in being a stone cold upper class bitch one day and then an honest beggar another day, while exploring and developing a character and really getting to know them, making them even more interesting. I have always seen myself acting in films for some reason, however I would like some experience on stage. Thing is, if you act in films there is a possibility, however slight that you start to get noticed. Which can be a good thing for your career, but I don't know if I want to be in that rat race of publicity. I don't know if I could handle my privacy being taken away from me, or stories being written about me that aren't true. I hate that image of Hollywood in the magazines of a stick thin unhealthy looking woman accused of gaining weight and having a face lift. I know there are famous people who try to avoid these things and manage quite well, but even they can't always get away from lenses in their face as they walk down the street which I don't want.
If I don't go down the acting route I don't know what else I'd do except music which takes up a huge part of my life. I love it nearly as much as I love acting, but I'm no virtuoso, I can play piano and have composed pieces here and there, but I would never survive in the shark tank of professional musicians. I can't even sight read for goodness sakes, and I'm not entirely sure I could handle the pressure of playing perfect and interesting renditions of Bach and Beethoven every night to musicians and fanatics that know far more about the history and technicalities of the pieces than I. I just play the pieces and interpret them my way.
I am stuck. I know the likelihood of even becoming vaguely famous is slim to none, so I don't know what I'll do if my acting/music career fails. I am not a logical thinker and absolutely could not work in an office. :/ I am interested in psychology, but I'm not sure I'm smart enough to actually get the qualifications needed to do anything specialized in the field.
I'm not even sure what I am asking really, I think I just needed to get that out my system.
As someone said before, fame is a remote possibility. You may not be good enough for it, or it may just never happen for one reason or another. It's the least of your worries when trying to make any sort of a career out of acting/music. The highest priority in these is to improve your craft--then network your heart out, audition your face off, and practice like a madman. To get experience and become at least well known enough amongst those who want to hire you. In some cases, you can't even work without being in a union, and you can't join unions without working first....

In effect, if you even do get to the height of fame that you're afraid of--all you have to do is live quietly. Look at Edward Norton, for instance. Quiet and normal = no publicity good or bad. Then look at Charlie Sheen. Big and flashy or a train wreck = all the publicity.

You should probably attempt to get a degree alongside whichever artistic discipline you are pursuing. There are various majors that work well with music and also acting.

You just seem to be worrying about the wrong thing.
  • What is the shortest path to sanity?

When looking around one must come to the conclusion, that there seems nobody among these many people, who is not insane. When one can't avoid to notice what humans have made out of their life and their conditions. Every body is participating in a rat race with given goals and values, that obviously the result of manipulation from a few clever power guys, who serve themselves by making people to slaves in our consumer society. All are depending and are integrated in the given structure. As nearly all are following this established demand, so this seems to be the normal and nobody has doubts and questioning it. The very few who are expressing themselves, are called crazy, even though these might be the only ones who have a spark of sanity.
But even though people are getting sicker and sicker, nobody is asking serious questions about the real reason, as the established health system has for every thing an answer and the solution offered with treatments is nearly always meant to take away the symptoms, but not the cause of disease. So one disease follows after another. Is that not insane? Depressions are meanwhile 'normal' and even children start already with them. But some chemicals can take this away, - there are pills for every thing! Is this not insane?
The worst seems to be, that most people live in a split: In one part they are totally sucked into the materialistic survival needs and in another part they have adapted 'spiritual' ideas, trying to live these at the same time. Is this not insane?
Now the question is: What is sanity? How this state can be reached? How can one escape from this dominating fake reality that people have created and so strongly holding? Are coming these questions out of an insane condition or starts here a 'spark of sanity'?
By the way: My question was inspired by the question: "What is the shortest path to insanity?"
    At: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Asqlr7KKhOIQLFIMymGYWZcgBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20110831030648AAbAHH6
    This question is still open.
I just found an interesting quote from 'Erich Fromm' published in 1955:
"It is naively assumed that the fact that the majority of people share certain ideas or feelings proves the validity of these ideas and feelings. Nothing is further from the truth... Just as there is a folie à deux there is a folie à millions. The fact that millions of people share the same vices does not make these vices virtues, the fact that they share so many errors does not make the errors to be truths, and the fact that millions of people share the same form of mental pathology does not make these people sane."
Sanity is an illusion, a concept, that's why "normal people" are the sane ones, that's why their call you insane and you call them insane, what you are really looking for it's spiritual peace, it can only be achieved by yourself, try to find out something that you can like to do within society boundaries because there isn't really a way to escape now a days, try to search for your freedom in all time but know that your body will always hold your spirit. It's not that you are insane you just want something more you know that inside peace that can make anything pointless but your life so meaningful
hope that calms you a bit
  • what do you think of my report on the Holocaust? please read, no nasty comments that arent to do with it)?

The Holocaust is the name given to the murder of millions of Jews, Gypsies, the mentally retarded or anybody that was considered to risk the pure Arian blood line. In WW2 the Nazi’s built concentration camps, such as at Auschwitz-Birkenau, Sobibor, chelmno and Treblinka, to ensure that the mass murders were carried out as efficiently as possible.
People who were sent to the concentration camps were told they were going to work and live a life of happiness and freedom, as it said on the Auschwitz gates; “Arbeit Macht Frei” which meant “Work Makes Free” but by the time they realised the truth about the camps, it was too late and their fate was sealed.
The holocaust effected the Jews by treating them like rats and discriminating their race. The Jews lived in fear, waiting for their time to be taken away and murdered. To get away from the German soldiers, the Jews would hide anywhere they could like under floorboards, in attics and even away from home like in corn fields or barns. 70% of the time, they would be found.
The holocaust still affects the Jews today because the memories of the camps are very disturbing. It also made the Jews realise the way they were treated was wrong and forced them to create their own country called Israel. Now the Jews have their own country they know a disaster like this will not happen again.
I think the holocaust is sick and it makes me think, what if that was me? What if that happened to a member of my family? It also makes me wonder, what was going through Hitler’s mind when he made the decision to murder thousands of people because they didn’t have Arian blood! He should of been stopped alot sooner. The Germans should of realised what was happening to the Jews and tried to stop this disaster from happening. It makes me feel angry and dead inside when I think of the way they were treated and could never wish for this to happen on any human being.
People still believed in God throughout the Holocaust because God was the only thing they could turn to, to prey and look up to. Real Jews did not think that they should stop believing in their faith, just because one man did not like it.
Some people think that because the Holocaust is over, we should not think about it anymore and that we should just forget about it but I think it is right to pay our tributes to the brave people who fought for their lives and others around them.
The Jews would arrive on trains of over 800 people and be taken into the camps. They would be given a number and told where they would be sleeping. The sleeping conditions were horrendous, the beds would be pieces of wood, jammed into bricks that were stacked 4 storeys high with no covers or pillows.
The Nazi’s played games with the Jews, lining them up and seeing how many people the bullet would go through at once, just because they liked to see them go through pain and torture. They made piles of hair, clothes, shoes, personal belongings and even tooth fillings.
    My model...
as good as it goes but you act in isolation, least not forget the German people were subjected to a barbaric subhuman aerial bombing campaign at this time, at the end of the day what's the difference between a 5 year old being gassed with zyclone b or slow baked in an air raid oven? i rather suspect to you the 5 year old german child deserved it?

    near the mark?
  • New perspective on life?

I wanting to find a more stress free way of viewing life.

I am sick of wishing my life away, you know can't wait for weekend, summer holiday, christmas, wedding, house move, kids. Its making time go too fast. I want to start enjoying everyday and making the most of life - not letting my mind get caught up in trivial things and the 'rat race'.

I don't want to abandon my career and family and go and live on an island or anything, but want to look at my life from a new perspective. I think I need to establish some sort of spirituality (not in a religous sense though), maybe some sort of meditation etc.

    Any ideas please?
Yes. In our culture in India, this is considered as one of the signs of improvement.

The regular activities however successful leads to a hollow in terms of completeness and satisfaction.

The remedy of course is with spirituality (and also religion, for it gives or rather is supposed to give the spiritual practices).

Stress is an agitation in the mind, a hush of thoughts uncontrollable and not conducive to the natural state of the individual which sometimes is also of the nature of blank or a dull state of mind.

To avoid stress immediately (and temporarily) breathing techniques like pranayama would help. This would work out because the source of thoughts and breath is the same.

But a permanent solution to stress and vacuum in life can be achieved only when we expand to get identified with our true source.

In Hinduism, our saint Adi Sankara says that man throughout runs towards gaining happiness (Sukha Prapti) and removal of sorrow (Dukha Nivritti). But he rarely understands that his basic nature is Happiness (Ananda) only and all troubles, doubts, unhappiness is created by his thoughts.

We are happy when asleep. We say I slept happily. Now after waking up from sleep, we say I am sorrowful, stressed. So what is the reason for stress. We cannot say that I was not conscious when asleep. If so how do you feel that you slept happily. Modern science and western psychology may call it subconsciousness or through other terms. In our culture we say that it was our natural state, but we most of the times colour ourselves with thoughts and assume that thoughts are us.

Anyway the problems are because our identification with the thoughts. So the solution to the problems are always because of I and mine. The solution can be by understanding who is that I which is referred, whether it is our thoughts or whether it is our real nature. Thoughts cannot be us, because it keeps changing and flowing in front of us. Anything which could witness is apart from ourselves.

This is meditation in Indian terms, finding out "WHO AM I" also called as Gnyana Yoga, the path of knowledge. In this way we find that we are our true nature and sorrow is only because of identification with useless temporary thoughts chain parading before us.

Devotion is complete surrender as everything is yours (including me). Even in that case there is no stress because we see everything as a gift of the primordial cause (GOD), so there is nothing for me separately, there even I am His. This also leads to the same goal.

If all this sounds too much or irrelevant, simple tips could be
    1. Breathing exercise (Pranayama or others) to calm the mind
    2. Karma Bhava (Performance of Duty to work towards our cherished goal) alongwith Prasadha Bhava (Acceptance of the results of action without reserve or prejudice).
    3. Accomodate and grow by identifying with everyone we love, every one in the family, everyone in the groups that we work with, every human being, every living being and then with every...
