Government Spending

letthestressbegin2010's picture

While listerning to the radio today it said that the government had got some big billion air in who own big massive companies to look at the governments spending on such as stationary, mobile phones, taxis, paper and so on.

Well this person had said that there spending was all over the place. There was just £ £ £ £ £ for each differnt thing like I mentioned above. The business man said if I ran my businesses like that the lights would go out in no time at all. Then the government try and tell us it is not that bad. May be they should cut back on all these high costs. Do they need to print every email out, supply thousands of biros and pencils etc. Do they not earn enough money to buy a pen or use there mobile phone for work.

I take my own pens to work and I use my mobile phone for work all long with my home phone line and broadband I use for work. So why can't they. I mean to say I get 600 minuets a month on my mobile phone contract and I know that if I should go over that lot and said look I have used this non stop for work then they would pay for what was used for work use.

So if the government are wasting money on such a big scale and still say oh it's not that bad then they should try and do our jobs and live on a lower income and see how they get on then. No taxis here or company jet planes.

I bet if some of us smaller people was in government we could soon find some areas to cut back on without it affecting the economy.
The bit that makes me laugh is the latest in the news where the government are trying to get people off incapacity money on to job seekers money which would seem to be lower so as to save them a million or two. There are people who can not work and need help.

The government should look on there own door step first and say right do we really need X, Y & Z.

I would love to here if anyone else has got any finance advice for the government. You never know someone from the government may just read the post on this forum and take some ideas on.

Tongue Well no supprise there then. I always thought they just spent what they wanted to. I bet there is tons of things that go down to exspences etc. There must be loads of stuff they have and never use. Hey they could put some of the stuff that dose not have peoples details on Ebay and make a packet someone would like it.

How many new desks and chairs get bought that don't really need to be bought when they could have bought something else or said right we have X amount of thousands spare here lets put that back in to another project.

We should start a pole on what suggestions they could save money on and what to put it back in to.

That would be so good if someone from the government did read this forum as they may get some good ideas from it.

I have always said that the government spends money on what they like. I wonder just how many taxi, limo journeys are of private use and not work use. Do they really need to have and use everything.

Yes I agree they need some things to do there jobs ( when not sat in the bar ) but surely there will be no end of waste so it might be a good idea to send someone in to do a very big audit and just see what is being spent and where.

So yeah come on government get your act together and you might get the country back on track as well.

  • What cool ways can you think of to cut government spending?

As you probably know, £4bn worth of Nimrod planes are being scrapped as part of the government spending cuts ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-12294766 ).

As it is now considered cool to save money by destroying existing projects irrespective of how much money has already been spent, what cool ways can you think of to cut government spending, not worrying one bit about how much money has already been poured into it?
I agree with legalizing pot and taxing it pretty hefty. That's not a cut, but that will bring in some serious money.

Let's also cut out welfare. Natural selection ftw. That may seem contrary to legalizing pot, but if you wanna play, you gotta pay!
  • Why is evidence based decision making not applied to government spending?

Very little if any evidence of success (or more particularly, failure) seems to be produced about government spending.
More money is so often thrown at solutions that are clearly not solving the problem.
If a Minster is asked about a problem they will nearly always talk about the money being spent - not the outcomes.
The media does not help, by ripping to pieces any politicians who dares admit they may have got it wrong this time.
In business you accept your mistakes and failures and try not to repeat them - it's about time politics did the same.
Sadly, most young people have been taught a revisionist history and been led to believe that "socialism," bordering "communism," is the best way of life. Moreover, many liberals really do not understand that "social" programs such as "universal healthcare" and "educational grants" are NOT free. The revenue for these programs most always comes from working class citizens in the form of higher taxes. Thus, lack of education or educational indoctrination has led to many of the socialistic beliefs that people now have. o_O
  • As the UK is broke why is the government spending money interfering in Libya?

Continuing the age old tradition of minding other countries business at the taxpayers expense.

And in anticipation of any replies about human rights and an oppressive regime you could also tell me how the British Government would handle an armed revolution to overthrow the British Government and what the reaction would be if Libya imposed a no-fly zone over the UK.
The DimLebs wanted a 'just war', Cameron needs to keep the DimLebs on board, it diverts attention from other domestic issues, it makes the UK Ministers 'international statesmen'.

    Vanity, Vanity and Vanity.

'Regime Change' is the dish of choice from the War Monger Menu.

You watch, this 'protect civilian life' will only apply to the rebels in Libya, there will be no 'protect civilian life' for the supporters of Gaddafi.

'Regime Change' got the UK entangled in Afghanistan and Iraq, what paths will this new 'Regime Change' lead the UK down? 20 years of involvement and casualties - as in Bosnia - 10years of engagement -as in Afghanistan?

Where is the money coming from? It is being BORROWED, yes, you will be paying interest on the money spent for years to come. This from a Govt that says it is reducing the deficit and reducing the debt. The same Govt that is taxing you to death, cutting Child Benefit, raising student fees, and a myriad of other 'cost cutting measures'.

    Madness of the first order.

PS: Until 3 weeks ago, the UK supported Libya/Gadaffi on the UN Human Rights Committee! Libya could have called for a 'No Fly Zone' over the UK via that Committee.
  • How can the Government agree spending £7.5 Billion - on a London rail link?

Shouldn't it be in a period of contraction in the present climate - and looking to save money instead ?

It's as if those with the credit card of government spending are still running around - while the taxpayers are wondering what has to go to foot the bill.

    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/22/20101125/tuk-uk-britain-rail-fa6b408.html
The idea is to reduce the number of cars going into and out of London but I do understand why you would disagree with this. I live in the US where about 40% of the money the federal government spends is borrowed.
  • How have the government spending cuts affected you?

My auntie who works for the public sector is being made redundant and a place where I was on work experience really wanted to take me on full time but couldn't as they usually used the future jobs fund which has been scrapped under the cuts.

    What about you?
Can't get back into college can't afford it, can't get into university, can't afford it, i went into a Forklifting training course really enjouyed, it i was told my test would all be payed for, but when the new governement came in they scrapped the back to work sessions, and i was told to pay 250 or more to take a test, knowing i could fail and would have to pay 250 more.

Of course on 50 pound a week i can not do this.

So what a waste my 12 weeks where.

The cuts have also made jobs harder, it's harder now then when the credit crunch actrully hit.

Infact i rang up a job today, no answear whats that about ? maby they can't afford staff to pick it up it's just alful !

Also Food prices have risen i went into buy some clothes today as i'm wearing stuff from over 5 years ago, jeans went from 4 pounds to 12 pounds !!!! SHOCK, mind you i used to buy them at 70 bu 12 is alot these days.

Gas and electricity has risen i'm worried for my next bill VAT has gone up so my internet will be high also sigh ! .. so little money and not alot to spend, it wasn't too bad before the VAT rise, but now it's rediculous ! can't afford the simplist of things, i don't waste my JSA like most people, i use it how it was designed too, and right now it's proven almost impossible it don't even cover your toiletries or cleaning products like washing power soap etc.
  • How does Global Government spending cuts affect the Electronics industry?

Only information that affects the electronics industry in 2011 please. and can you give me links or a reference to where you gained this knowledge, thanks
government spending cuts affect all sectors. this means less money is circulating within the system. limited funds means, fewer investors, customers, and orders, this causes projects to be cancelled or mothballed, and R&D is put on hold or limited.
  • why does government spending affects economic growth?

I don't get how does the increase in government expenditure impacts on the economic growth?

can you give me a detailed, breadth explanation to why it contributes to economic growth?
The general idea that spending(whether is it by government or anyone else) leads to economic growth is that money spent becomes income for someone else who will spend that money which in turn becomes income for someone else and so forth.

this constant buying and selling is what a capitalist economy benefits from. the more goods and services bought and sold, the more economic growth there is.

more spending = economic growth in a capitalist economy
  • why does government spending have a greater multiplier effect than cutting income taxes?

Doing a past economics paper, i've answered the question and just want to see if im on the right track.

(this is question 2 btw, i've asked another one as well)
Because Tax payers will save some of the reduction in Tax ..
  • why when the Labour Government was spending money to inflate the economy did I not feel any of the inflation.?

I not feel the inflation. But now when the Conservative Government are paying off the money spent by the labour Government. I am feeling it. Benefits are being cut. If you were over 6 months unemployed you could obtain training now this has been change to 18months to obtain the training.
Inflation means a general rise in price levels, and occurs basically when overall demand is greater than overall supply.

When the labour government was spending, the economy was in recession, that means demand was dropping. But the labour government spending was not enough to increase demand (way) past supply, hence prices did not rise (much).

However, the effect you are feeling is not inflation but actually the effects of the conservative government trying to reduce government spending because they believe the private sector will actually increase demand, making up for the decrease in government spending.

If they are right, then you should probably find a job soon as the private sector expands, and won't have to worry about the issue you are facing.
  • what is the breakdown of the government spending in secondary education?

like how much of the £89 billion is getting given to music programmes, sports programmes, and clubs for the schools to run? i REALLYYYYYYY need to know this for an essay for english so please help, anyone!!! thanks
I assume you're in the UK. Is there a webpage for your Department of Education? They might have this kind of info.
One thing is the same no matter where you are: when you need information like this, you should head to the nearest library. A librarian will be happy to help you.
