Bouncing Cheque

road runner's picture

I relative of mine was paid by cheque for a fairly small purchase.

Guess what. The damn cheque bounced all the way to the bank and back. The cheque was for £49.00. Well he got a letter in the post about two days after putting it in the bank. No funds had gone in to his account and the bank charged him £25.00 for this chequed that bounced.

Urm hang on a minute. How was he to know it was going to bounce. His bank should be charging the person who wrote it out in the first place. These banks know how to charge.

It is the cheque this relative of mine has ever had a cheque bounce on him. Just out of pure interest has anyone else had this carry on where the bank seems to charge the person putting it in to there account.

Sad Thats a bit of a pain in the....... | The bank charging you all that money for paying a cheque in that has bounced. When a person writes a cheque out it is saying I promise to pay the bearer of how much it is written out for.

The bank should be billing the person who wrote it not the poor person who put it in there bank account.

Typical banks.

Smile Good news. Most amazingley my relative who had that cheque bounce, well the person who did it has only come round to his door and brought the £49.00 in cash and the £25.00 bank charge.

I was amazed when he said he had got the lot. In saying that he was totally amazed he had got it as well. I think that has put him off taking anymore cheques full stop now.

I guess you can't blame him but the person who wrote it has a good job and wage so unless he wrote it from a wrong account or his wages had gone in late which is against the law as they should be paid in on the said day. I told my relative that his friend should take it up with his bank as to why it did go bounce as that was a costly transaction.

Well certainly amazing and delighted for your relative.

Oh no a bouncing cheque. Why do people write them out if they have not got the money in the bank to pay the amount written out.

The bank should bill the person writing the cheque out not the poor sod it bounces on.

I hope there bank hits them hard.

Yes you were lucky to get your money in full but me I still swear by my cheque book and only write them out when I have the money in the bank to do so.

I just don't know why people write them out when they don't have the funds to cover the cheque. Damn moorons they are

Cool

  • What can you do about bouncing cheques?

My son has just left a job but they still owe him money. They sent him a cheque which has bounced - the third time that has happened. He needs to be able to ring and threaten them with something. Any ideas, apart from the obvious?

  • Is cheque bounce a civil or criminal offence in the UK?

When people write cheque for credit or advance payment and their cheque bounce--Just wondering about this since my country had recently changed it from civil to criminal.
It is a criminal offence, and has been for a considerable time, to write out a cheque in payment of a debt, knowing at the time that you wrote out the cheque, or should have known, that it will bounce. It is not a route that a creditor would normally initiate, because it doesn't get him his money back.
  • Cheque bouncing question?

My friend paid a cheque in UK pounds into their NZ bank account.

They take a long time to process and 2 weeks later she found that it had bounced.

When the cheque went into the account it was converted from pounds to NZ dollars and $3595 was paid in. When it bounced 2 weeks later they debited $3863. A difference of nearly $300!

She was told that the difference is because of the exchange rate moving

Can the bank do this? should the amount debited (when it bounced) be the same as the amount as was credited in nz$

As the cheque was in UK pounds and the NZ dollar weakened during those 2 weeks, who has benefited from that?

    Thanks

  • Is it legal to bounce a cheque for a house deposit?

I recieved a cheque from my agency for the return of my deposit with a reciept of it.
Since then they have bounced the cheque and trying to charge me for keys i have returned because the other housemate is saying i did not (which i did) can they legally pay out then revoke it?
Bouncing a cheque is illegal, I would think your paid your deposit by cash or cleared means, you therefore have the right to ask for the return of your money in the same manner.
They should not have returned one deposit until all the keys ect from all the housemates have been sorted out.
Go into the agent and ask for the full moneies in cash, if they are not willing to do this then follow up the bounced cheque with your bank.
  • what happens if a cheque bounces for car tax?

if a cheque you write to pay car tax bounces, what happens? obviously you are legally without car tax. How can you then actually pay the car tax? The DVLA has advised my brother he has to wait to hear directly from the Post office, which i think is a nonsense!
This is fraud. I am sorry but your brother had better co-operate very carefully as he has obtained goods (the tax disc) on a false promise to pay (the bouncing cheque).
You may think this is a nonsense but the post office could be very unpleasant up to and including prosecution.
  • how for a bounced cheque to be represented?

If a cheque is to be represented, how will it take for the bank to attempt to present it from your account again?
    Next day.
  • Can i trace someone who bounced a cheque or can i go to the police?

A member of my staff to a cheque off a customer, which bounced anyway to trace the person or should i just right it off?
you have to deposit it twice before you can take legal action. If it bounces the second time then you can go to the police, and file a report. You can go to the bank its drawn and try to cash it at that location, maybe the cash will be available that particular day, and you avoid a returned check fee with you bank. As far a tracing the person, the address should be in the check, but if not let the police handle it!!
  • How many instances have there been per year when a cheque bas bounced after apparently having been cleared?

    Normally:-
    1. When a cheque is paid in, it shows up on the account the next working day.
    2. More often than not, funds can be drawn on it the 3rd working day.
    3. On the 5th working day, the cheque is "cleared".
How unusual is it for a cheque to bounce AFTER the full clearing period. I am aware that in exceptional circumstances, a cheque can take 6 working days to fully clear.

    Any ideas on this mystery?
Day cheque is deposited is day one.
Day two cheque shows in your account but not available funds
Day four funds are available for use but cheque can still be returned by issue bank so use of funds is at your own risk
Midnight on working day six is the last point at which a cheque may be returned by the issuing bank and the cheque is cleared.

Ref to days is working days.
  • How popular was "Check " or "cheque writing" in Britain and USA before the Debit cards came out?

and why this was so popular among Americans? which years check or cheque writing was popular and why people didnt worry about not having sufficiant funds? and is this still possible with Debit or electronic "checking"? what is "Checking" really?

and how many people or which percentage DID "bounce checks" or not have sufficient funds? could one even be arrested and have to go to jail for doing this? how common among young people especially? and which amounts of "Bad check writing" could do this? what bout in Britain?

    please explain what you can

    thanks for your answers!
In Britain at least, if you pay by cheque in a shop, you always have to accompany it with a cheque guarantee card, which guarantees the cheque for the shopkeeper up to a value (e.g. £100, £250).

That way, the shopkeeper can give you the goods without having to worry.

In some cases, e.g. buying on eBay, this isn't possible, so goods will usually not be dispatched until the cheque is received and cleared by the seller.

If in the occasional situation where goods have been received already but paid for with an non-guaranteed cheque, and the cheque subsequently "bounces" - the seller can report this to the police. It would be treated as theft/fraud, so theoretically, they could go to jail.

However, many banks (including my own) are withdrawing the cheque guarantee facility, as the use of cheques has declined rapidly in recent years. Many shops are no longer even accepting them.
