Live In Caravan While Working

sellotape100m's picture

A chum of mine is thinking about taking some job miles away from where he lives and to save him a few quid his mother in law has a caravan yes you read correct the mother in law has one.

His most excellent idea or so he thinks and that is to loan this caravan off the mother in law and tow it up to some farmers field near to where he will be working and slip the farmer a few quid. He says this will save him a fortune in traveling and staying in some bed and breakfast place.

I said oh here we go one more caravan on the road.

I did how ever question is there any law that says he can live in it through the week and go home on a weekend ? ? ?. I don't think he has took in to account that in the summer months it might not be so bad but if he is there in the winter time then hell he may be on the cold side a bit.

He will need electric and water and some where to get rid of waste water so I don't know I think this is a difficult one.

Would him and the local farmer have to get permission of the local council or something. Mr pikey gets away with parking his caravan 10 plate pick up truck where he wants to so why not him.

Has anyone else had this idea or know of anyone. I would love to here any responces on the above.

I know of one place that used to have about 6 caravans when there was lots of work on a power station not far from where I lived at. I think the workmen used to get showered and changed at work and go back to the caravan to sleep, eat etc or may be go out for a bite to eat.

I think your friends farmer friend would have to get some kind of permission of the council first. If they could only see he was just sleeping in it over night then well who knows.

Now I am not advising you or anyone else for this matter but you could just park it round the back and no more is said so to speak. If there are any come backs on you doing that then I would go for the safer option of contact council first see if it is allowed and what to do next from that point.

Now if it was a case of your bedroom floor of the house was flooded, caved in, fire damage and you stayed in it for a few nights until you got the work sorted and when or if they turned up and said oh you have slept in it then at least you have a 100 % genuine reason for doing so, so as you could put various damage right.

So my final offer of advice is nice idea your friend has to save a few quid but check it out first.

Good luck with this idea.

Hello Mr sellotape 100. Um good username.

I personally would say tread very carefull. You don't want to get on the wrong side of the council.

How ever I like the idea of saving a few quid I am all for that part but really think you should or the farmer friend should check it out with the council to be on the safe side.

Ohhh I think you are entering dodgy ground there my friend.

Your chum may get away with it full stop but on the other hand he may get a week in to living in it just having his cup of coffee and Mr Council man turns up and asks what is going on here then. Then he will have tons of questions to answer to.

Now I feel certain that if farmer who ever had just had his kistchen ripped out and cooked his dinner in there for a couple of nights then I would have thought that would not be a problem as there is a genuine reason for using it as such.

I myself would say go to the local council and say look I have a freind who has a spot where I could put my caravan for a period of time. Tell them what you exactly would like to do and I am sure they will give you the correct information as how to go about it correctly.

I bet if he looked around there may be a caravan sight where he could officially put his caravan unlike Mr Pikey who just pulls up in his brand new pick-up truck and says ug, this spot will do.

Finally good luck and do seek the correct advice.

Puzzled Now that is an interesting one. I also agree with the others who have said contact the local council of that area and see how you stand. You may be as well to see if there are anykind of holiday homes you can rent such as a static caravan on a official site.

You could always buy a camper van type vehicle. You could ask your boss if you could park up round the back of where you work.

I have just had a even better thought. That is may be you may have a good friend work colleague whom may let you lodge with them through out the week and you go back home on say a Friday evening when you finish. That way you to spend time with your family and your friend gets to spend it with theres as well.

So the ball is in your court.

Go with the advice of the others and that is go to the council to see how you would go about living in the caravan whilest working away from your normal home address.

There are some very good replies to your original post Mr sellotape.

Certainly stick with the good advice the others have given you my friend. Do it all legal and you should not go far wrong.

  • Is there anywhere cheep I can live while working part time in the UK?

I'm a single 20 year old man who needs to find a place to live A.S.A.P I haven't got a job yet but I have been offered two part time. I wouldn't mind staying in a hotel or a caravan are they realistic possibilities? thanks in advance.
Things are cheaper the further north you go in England. If the job is up north, renting a 1 bed flat or something similar would not be unrealistic.
The main problem about staying in a hotel/caravan to live is that you wouldn't have a permanent address as such which an employer will notice.
  • How can handle living with such pain, and family blame?

    Family ruined by blame?
I feel so hurt, and totally devastated :(

    Sorry so long.

My brother and I had a rather difficult child hood, as our mother (our only parent) was physically and mentally abusive towards us, with me especially, but that is because i knew my father, and missed him terribly. She hated me for this. My brother, being 5 and half years younger, never knew him.

I would say we carry the scars from this, and although we are a tad messed up emotionally. We have done ok.

I loved my brother, and felt we had been in it together. I ran away when i was 15 (my relationship with my mother was terrible by this time), but always stayed in touch with my brother, perhaps a bit intermittently, as there was no phone in the house, or mobiles / internet back then. But i did my best.

When i turned 16 i was offered a job working for a man who kept horses. Before running away, i had sometimes ridden his horses for him, and he was keen to employ me. I lived in a caravan, illegally at the back of his stables, but i did not care, anything was better than living with my mother.

I worked for this particular employer for about a year, and other than being a bit of an arrogant man, i quite liked him really.

I came back to work for the same employer when i was 19, it was for the winter only. During this time i managed to secure a job for my brother, mowing lawns, digging gardens, etc.. He was almost 14. I was delighted for him, as i knew he was never given pocket money, and mother refused to buy him the latest trainers etc, which seems to be so important to young, teenage boys.

I moved to london after the winter and started to settle there. My brother continued to work for this person for a little while.

Fast forwarding some years, my brother went to uni. Did well, and left to work in Japan - for 5 years. Up until he left for Japan, i had, what felt like, a mutually good caring relationship with my brother.

He returned a different person :(

At first he said he was too busy, and stressed to make/have contact, or meet up, as he started a masters degree straight away upon his return. I found it a little odd, but accepted it. Then 2 years on, I lost my partner (he died) and i needed and wanted to move away. Although i felt my brother had been acting a little odd towards me, i wanted to move to the north to start over with my life, and my babies life, who was due to be born, and to build the bond again with my little brother.

Since moving to be be near him, i have been treated with utter disdain. I have been trying for over 2 years to 'be his friend'. In return i he has treated me like an unwanted dog. I could not understand why he almost breathed hatred when having to speak to me. I asked why, on so many occasions, does he make me feel as though i have done something wrong. He never gave me any answers, and the more I asked the more nasty he would be.

It has reached the point that i can take no longer take his treatment, and i have ceased to make...
wooow im sorry to hear this as i was reading i felt soo emotinol nearly cryed. And im a guy. Look im realy sorry for what you had to go through but never give up on your brother i also had 2 friends who was onced raped he took out all his anger on me for some reason haveing punch ons with me even made me faint but i forgave him because i knew how he felt.look you got to pray there is a God out there go to church and ask him to help you. Trough my challanges i always ask God to help me.he will never give up on you God loves us all its true.just give your bro a little time off and then a few days ask him if you want to meet up. Hoope it helped and ill pray for you ok. God bless
  • How can I get married with no job?

A few years ago I met a Chinese girl at uni. When I finished my MA, she went back to China and I started looking for a job. The plan was that I get a job and she applied for a fiance visa to come back to the UK so we could get married. After 12 months, I could only find a cleaning job, part time 2 hours a day. I have been applying for jobs pretty much full time for a year, and it's been a bad year. I guess I'm suffering from depression now, have a lot of sleeping problems, with all the struggling to find work and the rejections and battered hopes. Now she is getting cold feet. She thinks I'm a failure, I suppose I suspect she's right, but I've tried my best. I didn't just fill in forms, I walked round town and talked to employers and handed out hundreds of copies of my CV, but I live in a small town, and don't have any money to move.

Well, what can I do? We are still "together", but this is straining things. We are very close, and talk on skype, and she encourages me, but basically this last 12 months have been like hell, and I don't blame her for losing patience.

I realise this is probably something being repeated all over the country with recent economic problems, houses being repossessed, families breaking up, people going crazy with stress and worry. But what can I do? Keep trying? What's the frigging point? I have an MA, 2:1 with merit, great references from previous employers (not that anyone's ever bothered to call them) but there just aren't any frigging jobs. I went for a job in a chocolate shop, 4 hours a week, and the manager said she'd had over 200 applications. I can work, I'm desperate to work, I'm capable of working, but it seems like there are 2.5 million places reserved for people like me now, people who are condemned to a life outside society, stuck in no man's land and condemned to a frigging sh@t life.

Oh, and just in case any rabidly right wing tory trolls are reading, the kind that always talk about the feckless unemployed parasites, I didn't claim benefits the whole year, because I was worried that it would count against us when she finally was able to apply for a fiance visa (I have to show I'm capable of supporting myself and her while she is here.)

How did I survive for a year without benefits. Good frigging question. I ate sh@t, reduced-price out-of-date food every night and then lived on the £60 a week from my cleaning job for the last 4 months while sleeping in a caravan in the woods.

Well, nothing's changed, I'm still here, winter is coming, and the same frigging sh@t life carries on.

Why is it in this country 1% are happy to own 90% of the wealth and let the rest of us rot. I mean, if that was me, I'd be embarrassed. I suppose they think they are something special and people like me (cleaners! phah!) are worthless scum. What a frigging life. Imagine you're in a group washed up on a desert island and one guy says, "OK, I'm having 90% of the coconuts. You guys can fight over the remaining 10%" WTF? Who makes...
You keep trying. Keep banging every door down until someone gives you a job. Also, and I'm NOT assuming here, but please don't think that you're too good for any job, either. If you have to salt some chips and put them in a to-go bag for a little while, then so be it.

It's hard right now, and it's only getting worse. Just keep on trying and stop being so negative. I was laid off twice in a 6 month span, and before that, I was working 10 hours a week saving every penny and tip I could just so I could get some food, and before that, I was homeless for a time, so I know what you're going through. I tried and pushed on and I got a job. It sucked, but I did it because I had no choice, and neither do you, so get out there and try harder, dammit.
  • Is it wrong to force my son to leave home?

My 18 year old son does not work ,(about three months casual in the last two years) or look for work). He can't even be bothered to sign on. He does next to nothing around the house except eat, sleep until at least 1p.m every day and play on his X box until 2 am every night. I have inherited a small house and have the chance to move and live rent or mortgage free but there will not be enough room for him to move with us. He refuses to consider living in a large caravan I have offered to provide for him at the side of the house and will not take seriously the thought of finding a flat of his own. I have offered to pay the bond and the first six months rent. He just doesn't want to know. I'm left with the option of selling the inherited property so I can continue to pay rent on the home we are all in now so he can sit on his backside while I go out to work. I don't want to see him homeless but I don't have much time to get this sorted.
Told him if he doesn't work then its he that will have no money BUT he cannot wait for the fairies to clean up after him like they have done for 18 years. I realise at 18 it would be difficult to earn enough to live independently. The house I need to move into is only two bedroom (we have a 7 year old too). He inhereted 1500, bought a convertable, no licence, insurance L plates etc. Wrote it off within 24 hours! I guess that says it all. Thanks for the answers.
at the age of 18 he is old enough to stand on his own 2 feet.
most people can only dream of living mortgage free
take that option you owe it to yourself explain to him that you will provide the caravan but that is all paying a bond on the flat will only complicate matters
if he says he doesn't want the caravan let him explore his options he is far too reliant on you and needs to be introduced to the real world firm but fair i gave my son similar options many years ago and he never looked back and has matured into someone to be proud of
go for it you wont regret it
  • baby names - Very, very long name game!?

Okay, so when you are 21, you meet your perfect guy.
Since you both love music, he loves stage productions and you love making and selling clothes, you decide that you're both gonna work together at festivals that tour the country. You both love your life, and 2 years later, at the age of 24, you fall pregnant with your first child. your child is born is born 3 weeks early and you discover it's a girl. You decide you'd love to names her after your current favourite music artists, and your boyfriend agrees. What's her name?? she has two middle names.
You take your daughter with you across the country, touring around with all the festivals. She's a very happy little girl and makes loads of friends who are also at all the festivals. During the winter months you used to always stay in your caravan, but now your girl is getting a little older, you decide to buy somewhere where you can live when you're not at festivals. You find the perfect, idealic, 3 bedroomd cottage. When your little girl is 2 years old, you decide it's time to have another little one. 9 months later you give birth to a little boy. His first name is something to do with nature. (eg; Coal/Cole, Fyre/Fire, Egypt, River, Orion/Oreon, etc. etc.) his middle name is after someone in your favourite band of all time. Because you have your son you decide you should stay home with the children, instead of touring the country. However, this will mean that you are loosing much money as you won't be able to sell the clothes you make, so you decide to set up an online shop, which goes very well. When your son is not even 4 months yet, you discover you're pregnant again! Two months later your boyfriend comes home and you both celebrate the news :) When your child is born you are very happy and excited to discover it's a baby girl. You decide her first name should mean peace (eg; Pax, Shanti, Vrede etc. etc.) and her middle name should be your first name. You are all very happy and a year later, while on tour with your family at all the festivals, you fall pregnant again! 9 month later your son is born, and you decide he should have 3 names; his first name has the letter 'Z' somewhere in it, his middle name is your boyfriends name and his 3rd name is of one of your favourite music artists. Your oldest daughter is now 6 years old, and you decide you are going to send her to a Steiner School, which is an alternative school. She loves it there and is doing very well, and when she is 7 years old, you discover you're pregnant again. You and your boyfriend decide that you won't be working at the festivals anymore, as it wouldn't work with the children, so you decide to cary on with the online shop and then only go to the festival as someone who is there for the music etc, not as someone working, which will work a lot better with the kids. So, during the summer months you go to the festivals with your children, and one night, while your boyfriend is off work and you're both sitting outside playing...

  • Why do bad people get all the good stuff?

Things go right for people that do bad things! 6 years ago my then husband had an affair, when I found out he begged for another chance and even went out and got a tattoo with my name on!! So I gave him another chance as believed he loved me and our 2 kids and wanted to be with us, after all I had given everything to be with him and stuck by him while he put us in £100k of debt on top of our mortgage!!!!!

Anyway 2 weeks later I found out he had just continued with this woman anyway so ended our marriage, he is now married to her and I am married to someone I met 6 months after my marriage ended and we have a daughter and that's all good, he works hard but his wage is small and we barley make ends meet. My son from my first marriage is ill and it is taking years on the NHS to try and diagnose his problem.

Anyway after he left we agreed the house would come to me and the kids and the debts would be paid off by him and this all went down in the divorce. But after the divorce he never paid and I was taken to court (as apparently divorce agreements don't count with the people you owe money to!) by some of the people money was owed to and charges were put on the house.

My ex wasn't taken to court even though I gave them his details he just slipped through the net somehow!!!! He now has started his own business (something I encouraged him to do for years as his employer never appreciated him) he is doing very well and takes 4 or 5 holidays a year (he doesn't invite our 2 kids to join him), he has a share of her house, new car and work van every couple of years and things are going very well for him, we are trying to work out how we are going to afford 10 days in a caravan in October especially as our fridge just packed up and there a problem with the car! But I hope we can do it as its the kids only holiday.

He did start to make some payments to some of the people we owe money to through an IVA, and as he can hide his income being self employed he is making tiny payments. One of the banks wrote to us asking for a new financial statement to assess his payments within 7 days. Everyday for those 7 days I contacted him asking him if he had done it and I was assured he had. Now I have a letter from them saying he has failed to supply the information and unless full payment (£22k) is made within 7 days they will take legal action. So after 6 years apart looks like I will yet again be off to court and forced to pay more money I don't have. My ex is ignoring my texts and calls.

He didn't bother to send them the info as he was too busy getting ready for yet another holiday. Also we had booked a private appointment for our son, which my ex had suggested and offered to pay for, to finally try and get to the bottom of whats wrong and he cancelled it last minute as he had come back from the holiday and couldn't afford it!!!

I can't get a job partly because of my sons problem means he off school or needs picking up early a lot, also my current hubby works...
Gosh, I'm really sorry to hear this. I know as cliche as it sounds, he'll get what's coming to him. As hard as it may be, just try and enjoy what you have- you have family, and you have your head on straight. You're not immoral, unlike him, and at least you tried to make your marriage work again.

Another thing i'd do is cut him out of your life, if possible. If the kids aren't particularly attached to him, and he isn't to them, don't make arrangements for them to go see him. If they are, well, just minimise the amount you interact with him. I know you need his money- that is a problem. He seems to be a bit of a d1ck though, so it's hard. I don't get how it's your responsibility if he doesn't pay though.

Maybe you have to invest in a lawyer. I'm not sure how that'd work out for you, though. But all I can say is hang in there- I know it must be so hard for you- but your ex-husband is morally bankrupt. He won't last for long. Good things DO happen to good people though, however overdue it may seem to you. You'll get rewarded for all your hard work, i assure you. Good luck to your son and best of luck to you.
  • why is my brothers girlfriend being nasty to my mum?

ok its quite a long story...

my brother and his girlfriend of 6years had a baby girl in december. my brother works away, often for 3months at a time, hes been away about 5weeks now and due back in 7weeks.
they live about 30miles from us near the beach, they also own a caravan about 1miles from there which they dont really use anymore with them having the new baby.
my brothers girlfriend told my mum anytime she needed a break she could lend their caravan, my mum thought this was great since she only see's her grandaughter every 3-4weeks with them living far away.
last weekend would have been my dads birthday who passed away 3years go today, my mum always gets upset and depressed around that time so deiceded she would lend the caravan then, so off she went with her dog.

while she was up there my brothers girlfriend went to see her who took the baby and her dog, my mums dog started to jump at her dog, so she said you cant jump at him in here this is his home not yours. my mum was abit upset and said will you should'nt have brought him in when you knew my dog was here. so my brothers girlfriends mum took my brothers girlfriends dog for a walk.
my mum and my brothers girlfriend were left talking, she started to be really snappy with my mum, saying you should have the dog on a leash or you should have put her outside when we were cuming, my mum said i thought it was just you and the baby so i didnt bother.

the next day my brothers girlfriend text my mum saying bring the key back tonight, my mum text back and said im staying here another two days yet, my brothers girlfriend text back and said oh ok i thought you were leaving tonight....

my mum took the bed sheets home she had slept into wash as she didnt want to leave them for my brothers girlfriend to wash, yesterday my mum got a text off my brothers girlfriend asking where the sheets were, she replied and said i washed them for you, she then got a text saying well you should have just left them here, i like to know exactly where things are...

my mums scared to argue with her incase she stops her seeing her grandaughter, we cant get intouch with my brother while hes away as his phone doesnt work where he is and he cant check his e-mails.
what could possibly be wrong with his girlfriend? and why is she taking it out on my mum??
tina k, this is a caravan
    http://www.theholidaywebsite.org.uk/UK/images/caravan.jpg

its just like a very small flat, but only a holiday home
As an outsider and also a dog lover, I can see both sides and of course I also know how your Mum feels having big issues at times with my Ex daughter in law I have had to bite my tongue hundreds of times over so many things I thing I have learned over the years ,most of it is just not worth the small stuff ..Let it go Is it better to be right? Or is it better to be happy? I do feel however if your mum took all the sheets home to wash she should have called this girl and let her know before she did so as these are all personal items, belonging ti them even though it is her son he has started a life and family with this woman who was already annoyed over the dog thing so of course this sheet thing is just adding to the flames but please do not sweat the small stuff as this will make things harder in the future and drive a wedge thru the relationship and there is a precious Grandchild involved who needs her Grandmother and Aunt! I have to ask you being from the USA .. just what is a caravan?? Is it a van fully furnished with beds bath and microwave inside on wheels? is it a cottage by the beach?? EDIT~ thank you for the picture they are called trailers here in the USA and people live in them here year around ,some in the country and some in trailer parks they are even set up and used as homes in town . They are also used as second homes or summer homes here ...
  • Lying to my dad and I hate it, I'm scared of him and his reaction to the truth.?

Ok so sit down, this is a long one, I get it if you don't want to read and think I'm sad and should realise that there are more pressing issues in life/the world and that I should just grow some balls and talk straight to my dad.

So here goes. Me and my dad have quite a typical father son relationship. Pretty bad at communicating, and showing emotions unless they are of humour, cars or "have a good week?" small talk basically.

I have always been scared of him and take his opinions seriously obviously because he's my dad and role model. He has pretty set beliefs about things like other cultures living in the UK/Europe that I won't delve into. And while I agree with him on some matters, I refuse to tar entire religions/races and cultures with the same brush.

I find it very hard to talk to my dad about my life, and what I get up to. I should mention that my parents split up when I was about 2 or 3 years old so I have never properly bonded with my dad because I saw him a maximum of twice a week and then the occasional week's holiday abroad.

Now I am 18 nearly 19 I am starting to realise that I am my own self and that my life is in my hands and no one else's. I realise that I have the power to override any decisions my parents make and ignore all their advice which of course I don't, because I'm not an idiot. However I know that I can if I wish, and that power in its self as an adult is nice to have. It has taken me a long time to realise that, and it's started me thinking about all the opportunities I have wimped out on, and how unbelievably low my self esteem/confidence is. I would like to blame it all on my dad, but that's unfair. My dad is great, he's there when I need him and all that but as harsh as it sounds he has set the bar pretty low in terms of achievements and aspirations. He has worked for family all his life. He started out working for my nan in her caravan sales yard fixing the caravans, then his brother in law and sister took over the business and at the time he was actually offered the business by my nan which he refused because he is so scared of responsibility. So he worked for his brother in law which he hated and endured for 20+ years. They did pay him pretty poorly but he never spoke up about a raise. Then he decided a few years ago to quit and work for my grandad who was starting to build a house in the countryside at the time. He is still doing that now and is registered as self employed. Another opportunity that he passed up on was property developing and renting. The house that he lives in today was bought for him by my grandad who had the intention of my dad selling it on or renting it out and then buying another house and becoming a landlord like my grandad (who is loaded by the way). But he took the easy way out as usual.

He is lazy as hell too and goes on about how hard his life is and how he has to put up with his dad and building all day which he groans on about whenever I see him when I couldn't give a shit...
I have to admit it lost the tree for the forest. But I think you are trying to come to your own as a person.

There is no reason to try and change your dad's mind about things he believes. Instead, to foster your relationship with him you need to focus on common ground. Say you both like football, talk about that. As your relationship builds with little things you can eventually talk about bigger things.

A lot of things that you consider important probably aren't. When it comes down to it what is important are the things that bring happiness and contentment to you. Are opinions about world religions or politics going to do that for you and your dad? Probably not. While it might be nice to share those opinions it's not really important.

I have a godson who is just coming to his own - he is a freshman at university and 19 years old. He and I have enjoyed many conversations and when he was younger he took my lead and thoughts about many issues. Now that he's older I told him - I may not agree with what you are doing or thinking and I may not understand it but you can be assured I'll support you in your choices. And with that, we've maintained a good relationship because he knows he can throw anything on the table and I'll sit with him through it all. I trust your dad probably wants the same with you.

Its a pretty fair idea for a story or a screenplay. It all depends on how you write it but at least you know where you want to go with it. Just a point though, I am not sure I am buying the idea of the leader of the biker gang being the big syndicate leader. Maybe have the biker introduce Mark to a powerfull underworld figure who he starts working for? Just an idea.

Next step is getting it down on paper and then editing it and re-writing where necessary until you have done the best job you can on it. Then get it sent off. Its worth getting some honest feedback on it from someone you can trust to be honest though - not just the idea but on your actual writing. Having a good idea is easy, lots of people do it, following up and doing the work is what counts.

    Good luck.
