paying the balance

tigger16's picture

i recently bought a property at auction, it was cheaper than i thought and i was wondering whether i can pay the balance using a credit card.

That is a interesting one. I am sure you could pay the balance on a credit card if they take card.

If anything they may wait a few days to make sure the have got the payment on there system before letting you have the keys to the place otherwise you may get a place for free if all went wrong.

What if you were to get a personal loan if you have that sort of limit on the credit card and pay that off in no time at all.

I guess this is something you should have asked the auction place at the start of the sale proceedings as I understand that once you have bought something at a auction they like you to have the funds there and then to pay for your purchase.

i paid the balance with a credit card, no problem, i applied for a loan weeks in advance and despite assurances it would all be ready in 14 days, it actually took 6 weeks, sign of the times perhaps.

Well that is really good news for you Tigger.

I shall remember that one for future reference.

I shall remember that one for when I have the funds on the credit card to make such a purchase.

Most interesting information you have posted there. Well I have not got that room on my card or in the bank but it is certainly worth knowing for the future or may be I could tell someone else I know of.

All the same I think it was a very good idea.

Well if you can pay that balance off quick before you get the interest that is a good way of getting a cheap loan.

Good on you mate.

Just read this post and that was really interesting. I did not know you could do that but will bear it in mind for future reference.

Well done to the original poster. Great information.

Yeah come to think of it that if you have a big credit card limit and can afford to put a large payment on it and be able to pay it of when the statement comes in that is a most excellent idea indeed.

I wish my card had a big limit but in saying that it would take me a whole life time to pay it off.

  • How long do I have to give a builder to complete work before taking it elsewhere and not paying any balance?

I have recently had some building work done - foolishly had a timeline (2 weeks) but no specific end date in the quote. The majority of the work has been done well however it is now 10 weeks since the work started and there are still some things to be completed. I have held back some money pending completion but no one has been to do anything for the last 6 weeks. How long until I can refuse to pay the outsdtanding balance and complete the work myself?
You are in a builders time line here, with no signed completion date,he holds the whip hand and can sue you.He may be waiting for various, difficult to get ,materials, before he is able to complete. The builders promise of future intent holds sway here under the law.Ask him (in a reasonable manner)when he is likely to complete,no threats or intimidation.Have patience ,you may be surprised.
  • i've recently become an avon rep and wondered how exactly you pay yourself after paying off account balance?

    UK based answer thankyou.
after customers pay for their orders i put the money in my account to pay for them and there is no money left over.
There should be money left over. If you're paying for a starter pack or only producing a few orders that could be the problem. I can't remember how much you need to make but it's around £50-£100 worth of orders before you earn anything.

They charge you 75% of the product value and you keep the 25% or something along those lines. Phone your team leader and they'll tell you the minimum target before you get paid.
  • Can I pay one credit card with another and avoid the balance transfer fee?

My credit card is offering 0% on balance transfers but with a fee of 3%. It is also offering purchases at 0% with no fee. If I just make a payment to my other credit card using this first one, rather than requesting a balance transfer, will I avoid paying the balance transfer fee?
I Paid my Egg balance with my LloydsTSB CC this month and it went through fine. Not sure if other companies allow this though, or if it would be considered a 'purchase'.
You don't have to transfer the whole balance of a credit card when transferring a balance at a special offer rate. Perhaps try transferring a small amount (eg£50?) by paying by credit card to see how it goes through. If it doea and is a 'purchase' then transfer the rest of it.
  • Buying a tv from someone who has still to pay balance.?

A friend has brought a tv,she still owes £1000 on it which she has to pay in april. She wants to sell the tv to me for £700 and i just really want to know if she didnt pay the final remainder would i be liable.I wasnt going to change it in my name, was just gonna buy it from her,and put the £700 as a payment of the balance..any advice!
The tv is 5 months old is worth £1400 right now to buy, that why i thought it was a good deal.
It all depends on whether she acquired the television using a loan or hire purchase.

If your friend brought the television on hire purchase then she does not own the television and can't sell it. If you buy it you can be prosecuted for receiving stolen property.

If your friend brought the television using a loan then she owns the television not the finance company and she can do what she wants with it.

However - why on earth would you spend £700 on a second hand television? There are far better bargains to be had.

If you buy a television from your friend you loose all consumer protection that she has. Ie, if the television is new then she is covered should the television be faulty under the Sales of Goods Act and other legislation.

She can pass the television onto somebody else but she can't pass on her rights under the legislation so you would have no come-back against the shop she originally brought it from should it prove faulty.
  • How do I pay the balance of my credit card?

Ive only recently got my first credit card and have just used it for the first time, which is fine but I'm not sure how I now set about paying the transfer off, do I have to wait till my next statement and contact my bank?
This probably seems like a stupid question, sorry
You will get a bill from the credit card company in the mail. You can send them a check, pay through your bank's electronic bill payment system, or use the credit card's own website.

Paying electronically will get your payment in much quicker. It's very important to make sure that they payment is received before the due date to avoid a late fee.
  • Will paying off a defaulted balance remove the default from a credit report?

Questions in the title really, owed money to a bank a year ago.. Didnt know anything about it untill I defaulted with the credit angency they assigned to collect said bet, resulted in a default appearing on my credit report. Rang them up today to pay and clear the debt, would I be right in assuming that the default will be removed from my credit report?

    cheers
It won't be totally removed. It will show as "paid", which is better than having an outstanding unpaid debt. The fact that it was paid late will still show, but, as soon as you pay it, then it starts sliding back into history and gets less important as it gets older. It will stay on your report for seven years, but after it's two years old, most places won't care much.
  • Has anyone else been conned into high charges by paying by credit card?

We have booked a holiday with Thomas Cook and want to pay the balance of £3,686 by credit card. They are going to charge us £70+ to do so. We only want to protect our money.
Wow, that is a lot! I certainly wouldn't pay that kind of surcharge. I have booked plenty of holidays with credit card and not been charged, never booked with Thomas Cook before though, if you haven't already paid a deposit I would tell them to stick it and go elsewhere. On the other hand I don't see why you have a problem paying by other means you should be covered by ATOL, ABTA or your own holiday insurance.
  • If you book a holiday when is the total balance payable? Can you pay monthly or what?

Want to book a holiday for September this year but can't pay all at once so does anyone know how long you get to pay the balance off after you've paid the deposit? Thanks for your help!
If you book through a Travel Agency you pay a deposit on booking then you can pay off as much as you want whenever you want but the whole holiday will have to be paid for about 8/10 weeks before departure date.
  • Can I cancel my holiday without paying the balance? UK answers.?

I booked a holiday for myself and 3 friends. I was going to pay the entire thing when I booked, but the agent advised me to pay a deposit because then if there were any reasons we could not go on the holiday, we could just cancel and we'd only lose the deposit. Just one week later I do actually need to cancel so have contacted the company to let them know, but they are now asking for the full balance of the holiday to be paid, which is nearly £4000! It's bad enough losing the deposit of £400, but I understand that this will have to happen as per my verbal agreement with the original agent, but I cannot afford to lose £4000! Please help!
i think they are trying to get you to pay when you don't need to.its extremely unlikely that after just one week of booking you would have to pay the full amount!
ask to see their cancellation policy. tell them you don't have the money to pay the full amount and that they will have to sue you in court (they wont)
    p.s.
if you paid the deposit by credit card you have even more cover and may even get your deposit back. ring the credit card company, explain the situation and get them to fight your corner for you.
    good luck!
